it only takes one hard drive failure to learn that lesson. I've lost shit too, come to speak of it, I should really do a backup soon.

as far as partitions, if you can figure the start and end blocks of the old partition then you should be able to write a new table and everything should be there. if you formatted the partitions or something like that then the filesystem is gonna be fucked up. depending on how important the stuff is it may or may not be worth it to go to that much effort. you would have to study how the particular filesystem works and what kinds of tools you would need to use.

n/m, just saw you were successful. glad to hear it, what did you have to end up doing?

I have no clue where the partitions were, all I know is that it was presumably as big an ext3 or 4 partition as would fit under whatever utility I created it with.

I ran photorec - it's a part of testdisk, which is the partition recovery tool I was trying to use before.

I still have the drive - I was considering saving an image of it for later attempts at improved recovery. I would much prefer the way you mention, but I was unable to get testdisk to figure it out, and I was unable to just manually create them in a way that worked.

*edit* you got me thinking, it's worth another crack, considering the organization pita I've got otherwise. What's an MFT? testdisk says mine and my MFT mirror are bad, and it couldn't repair them.

MFT is the master file table for an NTFS filesystem, if u had a partition formatted NTFS at some point maybe it's seeing it still, or just parts of it cuz it got corrupted.

making an image of the while disk might be a good idea if you have somewhere you can store it. whether that'll be successful or not depends on the state of the disk.

I read about some people claiming that putting a failed hard disk in a freezer overnight in a sealed bag so no condensation forms can temporarily fix some mechanical problems with a hard drive. That might make it worse tho so I wouldn't do that until right before you've given up and about to throw it away, I tried it once when that was the only last hope... didn't work for, still just went "click ....click": / of course that won't fix filesystem problems but apparently the cold causes the mechaniCal components to shrink just slightly enough that it can free up a stuck spindle motor and stuff like that.

Just back from the park with Grace. [IMG] At least 4 inches of new snow on the ground and still coming down an inch an hour. She so loves the snow and since it is warmer today (15F degrees) she got to run around in the snow longer than that last week of below zero and wind chills.

[IMG] That was one happy dog. [IMG]

Yeah, this is the one I accidentally installed XP over, not the one with the dancing head.

I believe the idea is that freezing it shrinks shorted coils in the motor and then they stay, if the drive isn't spinning up. It might also unstick heads. I wouldn't worry about it, but I WOULD worry about spinning it up while cold - heads stick due to failed lubricant, as I understand it, and cold greatly thickens oils.

munchkin is ridiculously shy. kicks like mad for me, flip flops, i can ID legs, butt head, getting hit with elbows vs knees, can even feel the kicks to my insides, when only the back and head is against the front of my belly... but put a camera on, and nuffin. let someone else feel, and only the faintest of flutters. i think its kind of funny, but really wish hubby and son could feel more. soon i guess.

Oil change day for all the cars. 3 in all I also have to try and fix the window on my girlfriend's Jeep. Probably won't be able to figure that one today or without expensive parts. There is already a recall about the gas tank and how it can explode when getting hit from behind. But the official Jeep solution is to put a tow hitch on for free. I doubt that would shield the car that much in a bad rear end collusion.

the hitch would be 20 times more effective than the rear bumper....if it even has a bumper

i will never understand why colorado drivers suck so bad in the snow. there are accidents EVERYWHERE. roads closed, dont know how hubby is supposed to get to work, i want him to take the coach bus up, but half the time they just decide not to go when the weather is bad (even though its mostly people that work up there that depend on them)

he should stay home, but his boss is too stupid to have a full staff, what a clusterfuck. and the weather is only supposed to get worse. they should close due to weather, but they wont. pain in the ass.
