Dear God, give us the strength to beat the fuck out of that other team. One might call it the Superbowl Prayer.
Yes, Christians curse too as do the majority of people regardless of their religion. That being said, there is a big difference between cursing in private and cursing at an outdoor event where people can hear you. I'm certain Moses thought "We're fucked" on numerous occasions and Christ probably caught himself off guard being stung by a bee "Another parable, fuck! Bee! Sorry!"
Every conservative Christian I've ever run across has had a huge problem with profanity. Liberal Christians focus a lot more on social justice and helping the poor. They aren't so uptight about petty things. A lot of them drink, have sex before marriage, watch R-rated movies, etc. Some of them are really cool parents too. Exactly. Sometimes the priorities get turned upside down. I don't remember what those basketball players said exactly, but it wasn't anything like that! Here's one example of a statement that a non-uptight Christian would agree with: "There's a lot of fucked-up shit that goes on in the world."
In the Ten Commandments, that one was originally taken to refer to the literal name of God, which appears as YHWH in the old Hebrew texts. We think the original pronunciation was something like Yahweh. The ancient Jews were so afraid of violating that commandment that they almost never spoke the name at all, and only wrote it with the vowels removed. I've heard a lot of people get mad and say Goddamn, but I've never heard anybody say Yahwehdamn. Would "Jesus motherfucking Christ" be worse, or the same, in your opinion?

John 3:2: But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. James 3:10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
As I recall "profanity" is a very modern concept. The Church only saw it as an issue from about the 15th Century so whatever. This was about blasphemous type stuff NOT the modern idea of "swearing". So profanity was about insulting references to God, Jesus and stuff, not words like fuck and ****. It was things like parodising Christianity, in the way Black Masses do. Stuff like "fucking **** cockmuncher" isn't actually profanity. Infact because it isn't Hebrew or whatever they spoke in the New Testament, nothing was ever said about it at all. Some people have tantrums over Anglo Saxon words. This was because the Normans invaded England in the 11th Century and had a problem with the upper class speaking English, let alone certain words. They deemed it was "too common". Profanity is actually akin to blasphemy which can include twisting and corrupting what the bible said. (Some argue this includes saying that God approved gay marriage... OOPS wrong thread..!) Even today we have this linguistic discrimination. Its ok to talk about "fannying around", but "cunting around" is seen as breaking the 11th Commandment by some of the more ill informed fanatics. Fuck is a word. Murder is a word. I'd rather be fucked than murdered. (Unless it was a pig, obviously). I remember having an argument with a mod at AOL. He was babbling on about "profanity". So I told him" do your homework, then learnt to speak English, you donut munching cock sucker". He never emailed back... PS there's also the word "cursing". Cursing is when u... duh ... put curses on people - like in Paganism or Satanism.
What exactly is "using God's name in vain"? Its some concept invented way after the bible, atleast when people try and define it today. I remember speaking to a company when I was a student. The woman said "You need to speak to XYZ and HE is GOD". I thought "what a fucking stupid comment". Comparing some powertripping idiot to a God seems a bit daft. Maybe thats an eg of the defnition? Maybe a good definition is "Buy this car, God demands it"? ie its using God's name for some bullshit purpose.
Cynthy160, you are really in the zone today! :cheers2: Almost forgot, Jesus isn't the actual name that the famous historical character went by: http://jesusisajew.org/YESHUA.php If the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek languages included casual profanity used in ordinary conversation, we don't have solid evidence of it. They sure as hell didn't write any of it down, with written communication being so expensive and difficult.
Well, oftentimes when I am pissed, I say, "Aw, fuck me, dammit!" (In a pissed off, exasperated tone, definitely not the inviting way it looks) and you know, maybe Jesus used that phrase as well.
"christian" anything, has i higher opinion of itself, then ever it has earned. as for profanity, there was, i wish i could remember who wrote it, but there was a rather famous poem, it may have been edward e guest, and i'm not even sure of the title, but it was called something like "when father cooked with wood", in which the preacher burns his fingers and utters a somewhat colorful verbalization of "ouch".
That about sums it up. Even members of the Christian Fellowship fall short sometimes. We're all human. BTW, at the end of the Ephesians passage above, I can just hear the dude yelling, "AND DON'T FUCKIN FORGET IT, YOU ASSWIPES!"
