The names for Hell in the Christian faith came from names that were not necessarily Hell proper, such as Sheol, which has a number of meanings in scripture. Grave, underworld, the state of the dead. Gehenna which was sw of Jerusalem was where human sacrifice by fire took place. Hades, subterranean abode of the dead. Lake of fire, ect. The reasons Christians believe in Hell has little to do with names given. It has all to do with the descriptions in scripture which speaks of eternal punishment, which is first mentioned in the Old Testament. Daniel 12:2 states that many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to everlasting disgrace and contemp. The resurrection is as you can see for both the good and the bad. The New Testament agrees with this belief and expands on it in more detail.

The human existance appears to have three components, spirit, soul, and body. According to the scriptures God is going to resurrect all bodies at the end of time. It is my belief that the soul is not the body but for a lack of a better term, the bodies back up disk. Their is no way a body could be resurrected when we know that only atoms are left if that. I believe the soul remains with the body and will be used to bring our form back into existance.
Scripture points out that only God can destroy both the body and the soul. Which indicates that we are speaking of two different elements.

The Spirit I believe is the actual person. I had an experience long ago when I was just 18 years old. By accident I got caught on a 4,200 volt eletrical line. When I was on the ground after this event I could see things with my eyes but they were not from my human perspective. For I was laying face down and not moving. Yet I could see everything that was happening around me, and I have come to understand now, that it was my spiritual body that was in effect. It was very strange, because my human body was there, but I was in another form as if nothing had even happen. And I was looking on as if I was an outside observer. I can assure you, there is life after death.

God is the Creator of all things, He existed before time, I have no idea where He came from, yet I know Him. I have had encounters with Him, and He is real. Many years ago I was coming home and just thanking the Lord for giving me my life when all of a sudden He spoke to my mind, He told me my wife was going to have another child. I stopped in the middle of my prayer and told Him that we had never thought we would have another child. I thank Him for the child to come, and then pulled into my driveway. It was late and my wife was sleeping. I leaned against the bedroom door and said to myself, my poor wife, she is pregnant and dosen't even know it. I then went to bed and slept for about four hours when I heard my wife throwing up in the bathroom. Well the rest is history, but that student, you know him, Jesus Died for you. Well thats the one God told me about. He's my son. All of my life God has worked like this with me. It has been my experience, that the more you yield to Him, the more He reveals Himself to you. The things that God has shown me are sometimes just remarkable.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit that Christ gave up on the cross. It could only come about after his death. Christ told his followers, "For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." (Acts 1:5) This is why it was not received until his resurrection.

Well, I agree with what you are saying about Christ Spirit, but man has a Spirit as well. Our spirit after physical death returns to God as written in Ecclesiastes 12:7 The soul clings to the dust: According to King David in Psalms 119:25.

 

That's a lot of arguing. What's the point? Who cares? We're all human, that's all that matters.... Those who go around judging people for the things they do rather than who they are, well, they are the ones who are going to be punished.... Everyone makes mistakes and no one can say they're perfect.... Well, I'm sorry you feel that way but every story I have stated here is the truth. And I still have many scars from the 4,200 volt episode. That happened to me April 24, 1969, and I spent 7 weeks in Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park Il. recovering from that, and the three operations I had to go through. There is no benifit to me to speak lies, for God will judge me someday as well. The Bible is the truth, and those who love God must speak the truth. Regardless of what others may say.

Well many of the stories that I have, and some are really amazing, can be verfied by other people, which would back up what I have stated here. What ever God does in our life, is usually for are good.

 

A 'full Bible' may not have existed until that time, but it's important to remember that there were manipulations of that text once Christianity became the "official state religion" in the fourth century at the councils of Nicea and Constantinople. I said OUR life which was refering to the world. When God destroys those that hate Him, it is not for their good. Thats why I said USUALLY. You really need to think about words, and their meanings. OK, Tell me, which words of mine twisted the words of Christ, and promotes my agenda over His. The problem with a number of people on these posts, is their belief system is based on no authority, no text, no anything outside of your own imaginations. It is a spiritual, political ideology, that requiries God to fit into your world view. And not His. I don't have to twist any of the words of Christ, for I simply believe what He is saying. It is you, who must go the extra mile to stretch His words, in order to get Him to agree with your imaginary spiritual belief system. You could never accept the simple words of Christ, because they do not agree with your thinking. Campbell, I hear what you are saying, but there are 20,000 different "interpretations" of what is in the Bible. You know I am telling the truth. You have people saying it is literal, some saying it was purely metaphorical, some saying it was poetic, some saying one part is literal and the other metaphorical, ad nauseum....

I like to take things AS IS and take the very words used by the writers--Greek, Hebrew and partly Aramaic. Then I like to take it in the historical context of the times and apply criticism of it just as you would any other ancient texts.

The Bible is obviously a man-made, man-dictated collection of stories which are both consistent and inconsistent.
