Hi, I rarely come down here. But I saw that documentary about evangelist group in America condemning Harry Potter. They are right to do it. For it is said in the Bible that one should not dapple in the occult, deal with sorcery and go to a medium. Harry Potter has done all of these things. Religion aside, Harry Potter portrays as a very good person with morals and virtue. But sadly it is condemned because it was opposed in the Bible. This is the problem with society today. I will elaborate on an oppropriate thread
j0hn, the Bible also condones slavery, genocide and says that disobedient children should be stoned to death in public. There are certain things in there that KINDA should be taken as redundant in modern society.
The majority of these things are Old Testament. Jesus once said in the New Testament, "He who casts the first stone". There are a number of ways we can interpret this, but when Jesus came, the old things were no more. Jesus was somebody who would sit with anybody. He judged not, but treated everyone as equal.
Obviously yeah, but the new testament also talks about demonic possession, and you wouldn't seriously say you believe in that would you?
I thought the point of that phrase was that "he who is without sin" doesn't actually exist. Like the "judge not lest ye be judged" thing; technically, someone who has no fear of judgment has no reason not to judge people however much they like, if they take it literally. You can read it as "don't judge people ever", or as "don't judge people unless you're pretty damn sure you're better than them". I think the second is more valuable as advice, as it means you don't have to sit meekly by while someone who absolutely does deserve and need to be judged gets off scot free.
Where I come from, the "Buckle of the Bible Belt", a lot of Christian fundamentalists condemn Harry Potter because they think it's "pro-witch", and more recently because a main character has come out of the closet as gay. I'm a Christian myself, but in my opinion, witches and gays aren't among the world's more pressing problems. The Christians who condemn Dan Brown are afraid that people take him seriously. There are a lot of inaccuracies and bad scholarship in the DaVinci Code, and if people believe it, it could weaken their faith in the church.
I am not sure what "church" you are speaking of..but I do agree to a point..if it involves spiritism, then that is what God disaprooves of.
if a member of an organized religion does it, it's a divinely sanctioned miracle. Anyone else, it's heathenish magic. Magic supposedly doesn't exist, but it's to be feared, says the big man in the sky that watches everyone and says if you don't follow his rules, which damn you for someone else's screwup, he's going to punish you... I'm sorry, I fail to see the consistency of a necromantic cannabilistic guilt-cult that preaches the divinity of a man who could work 'miracles', come to earth to save us from ourselves, denying magical practices as having any effectiveness on one hand and claiming that people need protection from it on the other. So which is it? is the magic in potter real enough to be feared, thus validating your faith's belief in magical practices, and possibly opens the door of 'aren't there others who could perform these miracles', or is it bullshit, which negates your own faith's profession in miracles and reduces your book to a work of total fiction?
I wasnt even thinkin bout magic or religeon or anything. I just thought harry looked a li'l bit corney ridin round on that broomstik. Couldnt they come up with somthing a bit cooler? Mabey like a lightning bolt or even a magic carpet or something. I just dont think a boy, or a man should be ridin round on a broomstik. I meen, what if it slid up his ass or something? How would that look?
i think its hilarious that Christians believe in a being with magical powers, but have a problem with harry potter because it promotes witchcraft/magic.
Hey canni... why do women like wizards? they pack a 6' staff, with an 18" wand for backup. Why do wizards make so much noise when they screw? They have crystal balls.
i think it should be pointed out that most christians have no objection to harry potter. the ones who do are the same people who ban catcher in the rye and huck finn, and plenty of them aren't christian. i went to catholic school, and i know plenty of kids and teachers who quite enjoy harry potter. also, i'm not at all sure i'd consider God a "magical being" exactly, but that's just me
