I am all about origins and this is what I found to be the origin of this holiday The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.. I don't celebrate holidays that have war and death involved.
It's funny how the US will celebrate a Mexican holiday but get pissed when Mexicans speak Spanish to each other in the US
I would only get pissed if they were talking, laughing and pointing.... but that's different. I'm not offended when my hispanic friends speak Speak spanish.... they dont' understand half the shit I say, but they don't get mad... when it all comes down it it it's musice and getting drunk... and having fun. That's universal.
I guess I celebrated. I went out for $3 Coronas last night and ate nachos. I also went around the bar asking people with my friends if they knew who Tommy Douglas was, and then I proceeded to talk about the IMF and how Canada lost 21% of our hospital beds in 1994-1995. I told people who were celebrating it last night how public health care is under threat.
i went to a pub and had a couple glasses of scotch (isle of jura 10 year, oban 14 year) and a beer (pilsner urquell) along with a lamb burger. had a shot of tequila at my friends place, and then later went to a bar and had a shot of jim beam and a glass of bells two hearted. none of it for cinco de mayo, though.
