Hopefully you will learn of the hell some people endure with mental illness without experiencing yourself or with anyone you are close to. It is obvious that you can't imagine what psychosis or major depression is like. Until you see it face to face it really is tough to grasp how painful mental illness is.

Perhaps you could talk to people in the real world who could help you learn. The betrayal of your mind to understand and process your own experiences is devastating. Don't increase their burden by denying their Pain.

People in general do seem to be more aware of mental health issues. Understanding at times can be difficult for those who do not suffer from the conditions. To also know that within any diagnosis there are different degrees that people are afflicted is also difficult to understand at times when it is not something that you are afflicted with.

Blanket statements often are used as sometimes people just do not know what to say. I do not necessarily think it is because they are being insensitive in a conscious way. While I do acknowledge that some are insensitive and do need to possibly try to possibly research and if that fails perhaps remain more reserved in voicing unfounded opinions.

If in doubt perhaps sincerely asking and listening is the most prudent thing to do.

Thanks for the completely logical well thought out and sincere responses through this thread.

I probably completely agree with you. I think to some extent skepticism toward psychiatry is reasonable. It's a field that grew out of locking people away, shocking people and giving lobotomies but 40 or 50 years ago.

But you're right, a combination of medication, new environments, and therapies are showing great promise. Some mental disorders may elude scientific understanding for years, and my only hesitation would be that many doctors do lean towards over-prescription. But that's simply because doctors only have three options really. Surgery, medication, and relation with the patients.
