Ordered Some Fat calipers, and they've arrived. Thanks to the help of a good friend, I did the math, Current BF% 23%. So It appears I'm not as gross as I could be. Stillin the obese catagory though. To get within the Ideal BW range, I'd need to loose about 8% of my mass, all from fat. So that's 235 with a BF% of 15%, So loose 20 pounds. *ADDED Also Note the from our good friends in the BMI labs. Let's say I get into the low fat, or 10% Bodyfat range. That Puts me at a weight of 220 (The same weight Mike Tyson used to box at... how odd) Fine, 10% BF is pretty darn good. Now what does BMI say about a lean 10% BF Destro? BMI 28.24 Boardering on Obese. Okay BMI, what SHOULD I weigh? They say 190 pounds (190/74inch = BMI 24.3 Just with in the healthy limit). Using more math that puts me at 74% of my current body weight. The idea of loosing every ounce of fat, essencial and non essential, plus another 3% bodymass from who knows where may be appealing to some, but not me. *END ADDED On a sucking note, I developed some recent pictures, and I have to ask, when the hell did I get a double chin? Time to grow a beard and work harder.
Hey Destro, I had some time today so I read through your blog here. I'm glad to see how things are working out. To answer your question from way back I'm half way through my 2 year degree in Exercise Science. I am a YMCA certified PT if that means anything (which I have found it doesn't mean a lot outside of the Y, hahaha) and I'm preparing to sit for my ACE exam in May. If everything goes as planned, I will then try to go back to college to get a BS in Physical Education because my true desire is to help children and teens stay active and healthy. (Just hope I'm not too old and burnt out by then!) As far as your calories, like I said before as long as that is working for you and you feel alright doing it, but I would definitely be careful, especially if you start to plateau. You might need to shake your diet up for a week (or just a few days). Meg is right about making sure you get the protien when you are lifting, but I get the impression you already know that. I'm not big on refined sugars, so I can't say I agree with the milk/bread thing. The quality and in my opinion how natural the food you are eating coupled with balance is most important. Congrats on your progress. Take care and keep us updated. Jen
Oh I meant to ask you which type of calipers you were going to get. I put a pair on my xmas list this year, but they are expensive so I don't know if I will get them. If you are planning on using them on yourself though you know you have to get the special ones that are for self evaluation. You can't use the regular kind on your own body. Glad to hear you are going by your body fat though and not just your weight. I don't know how many times I have tried to convince people that their weight is just a number.
I have a pair of slim guide calipers, and selected them based on the recomendations of my kines teacher at the uni. They're the ones she uses as school soccer coach, and the ones her students us in class. I'll find a link latter. (I found them on Amazon) They cost 30$ US with shipping, plascit, but accurat. They are not self exam ones, I know how accurate I'd be with self exam ones, and their accuracy is lower. So I'll rely on having one or two friends who can see me in shorts, and leave it at that. I've known for years weight sucks as an estimate, especialy for athlets or people who can, I don't know.. Lifttheir girlfriends over head and walk down he stret. For People like that they need to know bodily make up. the problem is most people either don;t, or don't think to, access a qualified trainer.
btw..the keg thing..are you using one for strength training? I'm gonna make a sandbag once i go back to vermont. Then i can see how weak i really am in practical stuff.
losing wieght and shaping up is about the simplest thing in the world to do. it is no big deal. And i should know cause i have lost 60 pounds three times over with three babies. Here's how:1.Sweat your ass off 1 hour 4 times a week minimum. 2. Cut way back on breads. 3 eat lots of protein and salads. 4. don't stress at all about calories, just sweat your ass off 1 hour a day minimum 4 times a week. in 6 months you will have a buff bod. it's just that simple.
Otter dear, it isn't that easy for some people. I'm glad it is easy for you, but being a rocket scientist might be easy to a rocket scientist , and not so much for you. Everyone is different and people have different genes and body compositions and reasons for putting on weight in the first place. Some people are in fact simply going to be more lean than others, some people will be thin and some will carry excess fat on their bodies, that is just the way life is. I really hate it when people claim it is easy to lose weight. It is by no means easy. And the same thing doesn't work for everyone. I have lost over 160lbs in my life and I'm the first to tell you that it is not easy. I worked out for 4 hours a day, hard core and that was not easy for me. There is no way I could do that now! I had to cut out a lot things that every single person around me was eating. I caused my own stomach to shrink by cutting my portions in half (yes there was a time when I could eat twice as much as I could possibly fit now). At 21 years of age, I had to work out constantly, I couldn't drink beer and eat hot wings with my friends. Now, none of that bothers me because I'm a different person with different goals and a completely new view on life, but it was by no means easy to deprive myself of the things that most people take for granted. It wasn't easy for me to stop using food to comfort myself and to actually learn to cope with my feelings. It wasn't easy to even admit that I was overweight (at 360lbs, I really was in denial) I'm glad that you were able to lose weight, however, don't come in here and make others feel bad because it isn't as easy for them as it was for you. And trust me, baby weight is completely different, your body is designed to lose it much more quickly and easier than weight that people have packed on over the years. It is there to protect the baby. I know women who come out of the hospital fitting right back in to size 2 jeans. You are lucky, but it still doesn't make it any easier for anyone else. Take care, and just consider my points here. Jen
Yes, please find me ones for $30. All of the ones I saw were like $80 and I don't want to ask anyone to buy me that for Christmas (we are somewhat broke this year with trying to buy a house). And yeah I have heard the ones you use on yourself aren't that great, so I guess you are right the friend thing is probably a better idea.
Megara - The keg was one of my favorite strength impliments when i was wrestling. Shouldered it, Carried it, it was awesome. I'm actuaaly in the process of making some sand bags (a 150 and 200). The 150 is for guests, just waiting on the delivery of sand. When I was in Aus I worked with only sand bags because i was too ghetto for Iron. Seemed to work alright, but it's hard to gauge how my preformance of standard lifts changed. Have you read Dino Training? Otter - This is about the simplest thing in the world. Did you READ my first post? Or any of the Subsequent posts? Wait, hold up, where was I complaining that dropping weight was like, super hard, and I totaly should give up and have some candy because I feel bad about life? Where did I talk about failing to loose weight, increasing my strength and endurance all while working a job I hate, going to university full time, and taking care of a partner with a chronic illness? Don't presume to know who I am. Fuck off with your self righteous, condescending attitude. It's Just that simple. Dead Bear - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...22-2438432?v=glance&s=sporting-goods&n=507846 They're pretty simple to use. I find the Included booklet a bit primitive, but then, it's pretty out of date. if or when you order it I can send you the lists I use, they're way more clear, and for a 3 site test. Ordering this thing as a canadian, 50$! 30$ to get it here and a 20$ Duty once it arrived at my door. Shame no local places sell these things.
nope havent read it. In about a week i'm going to make a sandbag using this method: http://www.warriorforce.com/sandbagconstructionkit.pdf This guy on warriorforce.com has a book called "ultimate training for the ultimate warrior." He's come highly recommended to me, so i thought i'd check it out and see if its anygood. It supposedly has a lot of routines/movements to try out. Where did you get a keg that you could tear apart?
Nice article. Pop a book review up once you give it a read. Sand bags, Kegs, logs they're all more fun. I find that alone helps you get more work done. The keg, Well, how shall we say... I stole it from the campus bar at my old school. I took a wrong turn leaving the gym, ended up at a vacant loading dock, and without much thought,m grabbed an empty keg and ran like hell. I ditched it in the alley and returned or it latter in the day. Used a torch to cut it open, filled it (with sand), then welded it shut, and that's the history. I think I need to mod it, so I can actual add weight as time goes on. I'm also on the look out for an unused oil drum, those things get heavy, and have more capacity. Should be a riot if I ever find one.
Finaly made up my sand bags two nights ago and worked them . Forgot how heavy 160 pounds of sand is Things have gone well, my diet has stayed mostly on track despite having international visitors, by my physical activity has been intermittent. Setting a goal of increasing my Deadlift over the next 8 weeks, along with my over head lifts. No reason I should do anything but succeed. have a good one folks. +Edit+ As for my goals, I'm feeling pretty princely these days. Still need to shed some gut fat, but my extermities are all feeling much better. My endurance is up, as is my health. Managed to avoid the winter flu season and just feeling good. Haven't touched the scale in weeks, but I 'm going to do a BF% measure in a week or two.
