I have to say that is one of the things I remember Brack Obama saying in his speaches about education reform that I liked. Community Service is very important. I would have hated it when I was in school but I understand it as an adult. However, I was a boy scout and did community service anyway with that orginazation. I think it is a great idea. Builds character......whoah did I just say that.......Wow, I am getting old.

Oh, I agree it would suck to be required to do it. The only thing that would make it ok would be if you could choose what you wanted to do in your community.

 

there's nothing to do in my community except pick up cigarette butts and empty the like 50,000 trashcans that nobody uses and water the flowers hanging along main street.

I was a boy scout in Radnor just ourside of Philly. We used to help pick up the war memorals and battle fields like Valley Forge.

I went to Radnor High School for a couple of years before I moved. I used to date chicks from Bryn Mawr and Villanova. Talk about great times. I miss the Main Line.

I put a bag into fruiting yesterday as well, I didn't dunk it though, just cleaned out the bag.

there is no character building in community service. honestly, it just wastes the township/company/whoever you're doing it for's time. half of my school comes from the suck ass ghetto, and i know that all they do when they do com serv is fuck around, and all the managers probably get pissed off but it's not like they can fire them. you can pick what you want to do, btw.

it's a bunch of bullshit, i'm not a criminal (at least they don't know that), i shouldn't have to do the work of criminals. this is just the school system subliminally setting us up for the hard life... lol

and that's another thing that pisses me off. people your age (this isn't directed at you, just your age group) get to make all of these decisions regarding my age group. who the fuck do these 50 year old middle aged bastards think they are telling me that i have to spend my saturdays picking up trash, when they had to do JACK SHIT.

if they want to require community service, then they should have had the district's STUDENTS vote on it, since you know... it's affecting US and everything...

 

ive been getting a indepth look at a certain community center..
Its run by the corrupt middle class people, they get food from the food banks and hourd the food for themsleves, deny medical care in the center for people that dont have ID, will not feed the homless, Fact the cops are scaring the homelss from coming over there, charge outragous fees to partake in activities such as music and art..
$50.00 for a 5 week course thats only once a week..

Last week a homeless dude said fuck it and walked out in front of a Train..

what the heck kind of community center is that? community centers here have pools... and work out rooms.. and a gym... and a day care.. and a subway. no homeless shelter/medical care/free food service. lol sounds like a wanna-be soup kitchen...

 

I will not say that you are wrong. I agree that the system is not perfect and the idea needs time to mature as well. I think if Barack Obama gets his way and community service is required it might be better things than doing chain gang stuff. I also feel it would not be a bad idea for businesses to adopt such a plan as well. I was talking to a co-worker about it and she said that when she worked for Hyatt that they had to do a bit of community service as part of her job requirment.

I know as a younger person that you don't like to be told what to do and I respect that. I am a firm believer in trying to treat my child as an adult but there are always times when I think I know what is best for my child. I don't now and did not like it when I was a kid either. I think that the only way to affect change is to get together as a community yourselves and dictate your tearms to administration. Good luck with that though. I have to say that all I can give is advice. Just remember that when parents stop being parents and let the school system raise their kids they have to think of things to keep them occupied. Not my idea.
