true (about speaking in the streets)… when we went to London it was drizzling and we were headed for our hotel not really knowing where it was. so we're walking down this main street in the East Croydon area and somebody goes "you look lost" and helps us find our way! It was really an amazing thing. That and there is a really cool outdoor patio type of hangout with bunches of picnic tables for people to sit and chat it up at. I didn't get to go there though, but it's at the bus/train station place in London at East Croydon. Anyway... Different places have vastly different cultures. One place people are keeping their mouths shut and another they talk to you until your ears fall off! @Mamluke, try not to find life dreadful. It's really sort of a wonderful experience. You know what I like to do when I'm out? Plug in my earbuds and not talk to anyone. Not even those pushy mall vendors that are supposed to stop everyone and give you samples or ask you questions to reel you in. no. not even them. Just me and the music.
