Yeah, I would just like to comment on this one: As a direct result of Putler's actions, the support for NATO membership is now ON THE RISE in both countries. The exact opposite of what Putler was hoping to achieve. Also, Finland and Sweden would not be fighting alone. Even lacking direct NATO-protection, the Nordic countries have a mutual defense pact in the form of Nordefco. The Nordic Defense Cooperation. Meaning any of the 5 countries under attack would certainly receive assistance from the others as well. This is where it gets interesting: Norway and Denmark are NATO-members. If they would step in to assist, say, Finland who's being attacked by you-know-who, NATO would then be involved regardless of whether they want it or not.

Also, I'm gonna have to join voices with all the people who are saying that Putler has divorced with reality. Yes, he most certainly has, which means we can't reliably predict his actions anymore. Expect anything!

Perhaps an apology is in order for rubbishing my thoughts that this could lead to World War Three?

    Peace talks over Ukraine:
President Zelensky says delegation from Kyiv and Russia will meet on the Belarus border after Putin put his nuclear deterrent forces on 'alert', furious at 'aggressive NATO' and being ejected from Swift banking community

Vladimir Putin ordered the forces operating Russia's nuclear deterrent to be on alert amid simmering tensions with the West.

    ....
    After all.
Things are getting just that bit more serious every hour.
And who can now say that this cannot lead to World War Three?
I have one thing to say.
    Oh! YES it can!

Ukraine to hold peace talks with Russia on border with Belarus | Daily Mail Online

Just wont happen. All hot hair of which the wests Media are buying it . I dont see Joe Biden panicking nor Boris .

Putins just using it as a distraction as the Ukraine crisis isnt going his way .

Put it this way lets look at the worst case scenario . The second he pushes that red button . Then the USA will launch IBMs and the UK will launch Trident . End of his beautiful empire for sure, the very thing he is trying to build. Thats why that avenue will not happen

However what very few commentators are seeing, is the possible use of a tactical nuclear weapon in the Ukraine . Things are not going his way. He is meeting stubborn resistance from the battling Ukrainians. I have already had it confirmed that these are within the Russian forces, the 2S7 Pion .

These are brutes and fire 257mm shells and have nuclear capability . A nuclear shell from one of these is equivalent of 1 Kilo tonne of TNT . Enough to flatten a city . I wouldnt rule out him using one of these but it wont be the full scale nuclear war that you seem to be hinting at .

I believe we are already in WW III, if you define world wars by the number of countries involved.

Here are the countries that I could find that are supporting Ukraine through military and economic means, most sending weapons or other military equipment. I believe there are others:
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Spain, Greece, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and the United States.
Even Sweden is sending 5,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine, and Sweden never sends arms to anyone.

Here are the allies of Russia:
Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela, and Kyrgyzstan

Romania wants aid from NATO, Croatia has issued support for Ukraine and 87 countries in the UN voted for or co-sponsored a draft UN Security Council resolution deploring Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
China issued a staement “on safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states”.

Short of sending troops and air support most of the world is already involved.

Did you notice the actual vote to censure Russia? It was of course vetoed by Russia, but it's interesting to note that while the vote was unanimously in favour of censuring Russia, 3 countries conspicuously abstained from voting: China, UAE and India. China & India are both nuclear powers. If either one sides with Russia, then the planet is screwed (not to mention Pakistan, another nuke power that seems undecided--although it would be a hoot to see Pakistan & India as allies for once before the world ends).

One way or another, most relevant countries have already picked a side. I agree, this is pretty much the definition of a "world war" already.

“I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” – Albert Einstein.

World war 3 will obviously be the end of world civilization as we see it now. Hence the need for greater prudence and patience in this regard instead of inflaming passions on the basis of man-made boundaries created by human beings on earth.

I think it all depends on ones definition .

For me the Napoleonic War was the first world war as it involved nearly every country and not the one we called WW1 .

Therefore you could be referring to WW4 :)

I thought I would try and kickstart this thread as I feel the timing is perhaps now right with whats happening in the Ukraine

I am not softening my stance however as the chances are currently still remote ,however there is a slight chance with emphasis on the word "slight" .

I would say it surrounds the question of enforcing a No Flight Zone .

The question of this keeps cropping up on various media outlets and so far it is met with stiff resistance from the various authorities and would have to go through various stages of bureaucracy before being sanctioned .

At this point I haver to be critical of a so called expert on Sky News claiming that the enforcement of a No Flight Zone would hamper the Ukrainians . Such Tosh. He is claiming it would hamper the Ukrainian Airforce . What airforce I would be asking ? It was tiny to start off with having just around 100 fighter aircraft which is in sufficient for a country of the size of Ukraine

    The evidence that the Russians have Air supremacy is easy to see ;

1)The infamous 40 mile convoy on the way to the Capital is being hampered by logistical problems like fuel and not being attacked by aircraft . There is no evidence of destroyed vehicles within that convoy that would have been picked up by the satellite pictures.

    2) The attack of one of the cities last night was undertaken by paratroops . Details havnt ben released but I dont think they were parachuted in but possibly transported in on transport aircraft . Either way you wouldnt commit such troops unless you had air supremacy as the transport aircraft needed would be very vulnerable to interception from hostile fighter aircraft .

So I think I can safely burry that reason for a no flight zone to be implemented .

There is plenty of pressure building up for at least for a No Flight Zone being implemented to be discussed at a higher level
There are coming from various sources

    1) the Ukrainian Presidents pleas
    2) Media pressure
    3) Angry people such as tongue lashing Boris Johnson received in Warsaw yesterday. Far more fiercer that what he has previously faced in the Commons recently
    4) A question over the effect of sanctions if they are having the desired effect .
    5) The Refugee Crisis
    6) Putin himself ramping up things .
    7) The atrocities being reported and the Russians constantly breaking the rules of war of which the signed upto .
    8) Too much Russian unfounded blame
    9) the involvement of Belarus ,especially as Air craft have been reported being gathered together .

Altogether these pressures mounting may just force leaders into implementing something . The stumbling block is that you would need a bigger participation from the USA . So far the USA havnt taken the lead that many had hoped for and expected .

A no Flight Zone would lead to escalation as just on return of fire from a Russian Aircraft would trigger Article 5 of Nato of which I have commented on before .This could Trigger WW3 .

Killing thousands of Ukrainian citizens via an unprovoked war and pure land grab, yup, that is the way Putin will gain RESPECT.
