As I said before. Not everything are black or white. There are many nuances in between.

    Dunno about that .

Russia wanted to join NATO

Formal contacts and cooperation between Russia and NATO began in 1991, within the framework of the North Atlantic Cooperation Council (later renamed Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council), and were further deepened as Russia joined the Partnership for Peace program on 22 June 1994.

    A quote from Putin
“Russia is part of European culture. And I cannot imagine my own country in isolation from Europe and what we often call the civilised world. So it is hard for me to visualise NATO as an enemy,” said Putin,

How times change when you dont get your own way .

The former Warsaw Pact countries had free reign to join NATO . Nobody held a gun to their head so to speak . NATO has always had an open door policy for new members ( Article 10) on the proviso certain conditions were met mainly due to the condition of the armed forces and a commitment to spend on them and to maintain them .

Ukraine could have joined NATO and was free to do so until the 2014 conflict started . Once your involved in a conflict you can't join as it goes against the theme which is adding to the security and not reducing it as this would have happened. And thus Putin's invasion of 2014 and the annexation of Crimea ( Ukraine territory) vetoed Ukraine's entry into NATO . Ukraine's military forces were a complete shambles after independence as well as all their best equipment and many of the top ranking officers including most of the Navy defected to Russia . All what was left was a territorial type army not fit for purpose which was sadly proven to be the case in the said 2014 conflict . After the cease fire of 2016 things began to improve albeit slowly . More training of Ukraine's troops was done by NATO members including the pilots trained by the US . Ukraine developed its own armaments industry and had control over a former USSR tank factory in Karkov hence the Ukrainian T84 tank was produced including for export as well .Also Ukraine developed a very effective anti ship missile the Neptune or Neptoon known to some which was famous for sinking the Russian Black Sea Flag Ship Cruiser in the existing conflict .

All this being well and said because Russian forces were still sitting on its soil precluded any membership to NATO .

I dont think Ukraine will ever be admitted into NATO due to other Nato members leaders would see it as an unnecessary risk as the Ukraine would luv to be able to activate Article 5 which would bring all of NATO to bare onto Russia . So I can see them using the Crimea as an excuse for exclusion as no matter what happens in the Ukraine conflict itself I can't see Ukrainian military ever liberating the Crimea .

Speaker of The House: Nancy Pelosi intends to visit the Island of Taiwan. This has China upset, making unspecified threats if the visit happens.
The Speakers nominal opponents in the Republicn party are supporting the visit.

Remembering when Democrats took control of The House of Representatives in 2006. Nancy Pelosi became Speaker.
She visited with Mr Bashar al Assad in Damascus, Syria. So this visit has a precedent of sorts.

Now this is all starting to look VERY worrying indeed!
    Are YOU worried then?

Mark Almond: The good news is that Putin can't start WW3 just by jabbing a button on his desk | Daily Mail Online

Vladimir Putin could not be clearer. 'I am not bluffing,' he said, in relation to his threat to go nuclear. But is he? And does it automatically follow that Armageddon would unfold if Putin launched the first nuclear bombs the world has seen since 1945?

The good news is that Putin can't start World War III by simply jabbing a red button on his desk in the Kremlin. If he decides to launch an attack, the order has to go through at least three layers of checks put in place to prevent the accidental or unauthorised launch of nuclear missiles.

Before reaching the nuclear silos, mobile launch sites and submarines, his command would go via three men: Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and the head of the Russian nuclear rocket forces, Sergei Karakayev.

Even after travelling down this chain of command, the launches would not follow instantly.

    Published today.
Well THIS is now starting to look VERY worrying indeed!..

US Warns Russia of ‘Catastrophic Consequences’ If It Launches Nuclear Attack in Ukraine

    WASHINGTON —

The U.S. has warned Russia of “catastrophic consequences” if it launches a nuclear attack on Ukraine, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said Sunday.

Sullivan, speaking on ABC’s “This Week” show, said U.S. officials have told Russian officials privately that Biden “will respond decisively” if Russian President Vladimir Putin orders a nuclear strike but did not say how the U.S. would respond.

Sullivan said the U.S. would “not engage in a game of rhetorical tit-for-tat” with Russia.

But Sullivan, in a separate interview, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” show that “Russia understands very well what the United States would do in response to the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine because we have spelled it out for them.”

The U.S. response came after Putin signaled the possibility of a nuclear attack last week as he called up 300,000 military reservists to help fight in its seven-month invasion of Ukraine.
The troop augmentation came after Russian battlefield setbacks, with Kyiv’s forces recapturing large swaths of territory in northeast Ukraine that Russia had seized in the early weeks of the war.

Widespread protests against Putin’s troop call-up have erupted in Russia, with police arresting hundreds of demonstrators participating in street protests in Moscow and elsewhere.

Sometimes a right one and a wrong one. Putin so far seems to have badly miscalculated, has unified instead of obliterated Ukraine, strengthened rather than weakened NATO, and is now taking the desperate measure of calling up untrained Russian men as cannon fodder. I don't know whether or not this is nuts, but it doesn't seem smart. And he is now a desperate, cornered rat.

Yeah, "reservists"... I guess having a pulse qualifies you as a reservist.
