There are morgues, and the morgues have a hard time keeping up with the rate at which the bodies come in.
Even in the case of suicide bombing, there are still victims that need to be recognized. People often talk about bodies being "vaporized", which brings to mind Hollywood movies. In the case of a bomb vest detonation, many times even the bomber is identifiable. Typical casualties are seen within a 10m area, most suffering from shrapnel wounds (most bomb vests are laden with metal objects, ball bearings, etc.. to inflict wounds). In the case of vehicle bombing, the bomber is rarely identifiable by traditional methods (non DNA analysis), but the victims, typically in a 30-50m area are mostly identifiable.
You don't think there are any morgues in operation in Iraq and you are calling me ignorant? I don't feel proof is needed, but there have been plenty of stories on the web discussing the amount civilian casualties, many having interviews with Iraqi morticians and showing the morgues piled with bodies. I'm sure Skip probably has some in his Iraq Gallery of Death, you could ask him.

Well according to the Lancet estimate, more than 75% of the dead have not even been recorded.

I bet if there was a Lancet study it would say there were 12,000+ US casualties in Iraq, since the US was only able to count about 2,897.

The results from this estimate are bullshit because they extrapolated a sample which was not representative of the country as a whole.

Can you please cite the peer-reviewed, internationally-respected scientific journal that contains that claim? If not, the Lancet study remains unquestioned, from a scientific perpective, anyway.

the wacky non-Iraqi continues to spew his Pentagon scripted braindead rubbish here i see.

It should be obvious to all attentive and rational posters by now that this guy is either a shill for the military establishment or else just another tv indoctrinated lacky who gullibly believes the soundbites and historically known false claims of the US military concerning the goings on in theatres of our acts of illegal hegemonic aggression.

It might behoove you, Wacko, to go educate yourself on the actual practices of casualty reporting by the US military. Anyone who has done an ounce of historic research would know that it is standard operating procedure to claim only those killed immediately on the battlefield as "casualties". Those who die in trnaist to Ramstein or in other medical centres (along with those permanently maimed an d incapacitated for life) are ignored in the reporting.

Time you woke up and realised that our ventures in both Afghanistan and Iraq have been based on and conducted under a veil of lies and misinformation since day 1 as is the very nature of imperialist aggressors.

Then again, you have never shown any capacity for understanding of the real agenda at work since this US administration stole its way to power nor any awareness of the backgrounds and deeply entrenched ideology which characterize the key archtiects of this latest US debacle.

You are, in short, a pathetic mouthpiece for greater and historically longer running evil than even Saddam could ever hope to achieve.

The Lancet study has outlined their methodology and they have verified their results with death certificates.

I trust their figures more than I trust those issued by those that wish to continue the conflict and increase their profits as war mongering industries. Show me your methodology and the numbers and locations of your sampled cases before you try to run down one that has been transparent in their methods and motives.

Hey with the latest information on Rummy's last memo...he did indeed cut and run, and probably looks forward to seeing his fortune increase through his interest in the pharmacutical company that holds the patent for the "bird flu" vaccine. I've seen it hit the news in the last week already. We'll be seeing more hysteria on the bird flu front in the upcoming months. I'd put odds on it.

Please explain. What lies were told to the world that allowed the United States to sieze the vast resources of Afghanistan? And I will give you a cookie if you can answer and not use the term "imperialistic hegemonic aggression".

There would not have had to be 15000 deaths every month. What about "shock and awe" is it not unreasonable to acount for more deaths during that period than any other, and who performed a body count at that time.

With the numbers we are dealing with then, there would have had to have been 500,000+ deaths during the first month of the invasion.

With the mass bombings that took place is that so unlikely? Not that I buy into your figures I don't, I accept the Lancet study.

Just out of curiosity what are those vast resources. I am sincerely interested in knowing.

I was actually being sarcastic. Besides opium there isn't much there. Lick brought up the lies used to invade Afghanistan, and I am questioning what those lies are. I believe Lick is a 9/11 inside job guy, so I'm guessing we may hear something about a Trans-Afghan pipeline.

Thanks Wacky, I was wondering. I understand a lot of your arguments, and I haven't written you off. I do read what you write and balance it with what I also have learned. I don't always agree, but I don't always disagree.

The reason why I don't buy into the Lancet study has nothing to do with not believing that this war is not capable of producing such numbers, or that US dropped bombs could not produce such numbers, it is knowing that the people of Iraq have more competance than being able to count less than 25% of their dead. The numbers that I believe are more accurate are still horrific. Obviously any count is going to have a margin of error, several percent. Do you believe it is possible that the Iraqi people are not capable of counting even 25% of the bodies. This is a moderate to strong religious population, like any, holds respect for their dead. Is this a people who would not count and identify the bodies of their men, woman, and children so they can be handled in a proper religious manner?
