Lol, I live in cotteridge (I tell the taxi drivers Bournville because no one has heard of cotteridge) I had to haul myself up to Erdington to do my NVQ which was an arse, probably cost half the course fee's again in petrol. I'm starting my 17th edition at Matt Bolton :)S) next week.

How does the plumbing work with regards to on the job experience because can you do it on a weekend as opposed to day release and not need to be working?

well technically speaking bournville doesnt exist, its a made up place where no alcohol roams.. my brother did his sparky stuff at matt b col =]

I did my city & guilds level 2 last year, it was 2 days a week full time (i passed, woop)
    I started c&g level 3 this week, its 1 day a week full time (9am-9pm =O)

this is my understanding of it..

To be a qualified/accreditied/certifed/whatever plumber, you need NVQs, and to get them you need to be working, cause its practical stuff, so atm im lookin for someone to take me on so i can attend college one day a week, but work towards getting my nvqs and on site experience, cause most places wont take you on if you only have c&g =/

maybe youre thinking of the apprenticeship stuff? thats more like day release college etc,

    whats 17th edition? sparky stuff?

Yeah, It's the 17th edition of the reg which is brand new, and unlucky I trained under the 16th so I have to do the course. You pretty much have to do it anyway if you want to get your part P which is what you need if you want to work for yourself, and that's another case of you kinda need to be working to get it, and you can't work (for yourself) until you have got it.

Do you need to be in full time employment or do you just need to fill out a portfolio?

How does qualified plumbing relate to pipe fitting? Is housebash plumbing and site pipe fitting 2 different trades or does it all fall under that same trade?

a qualified plumber will do everything..

say if i was qualified, accredited and had 10 years experience, had corgi and part p etc etc, then i could prolly fit all the water, waste, and gas appliance within a building.. so thatd include pipe fitting, bending, welding, boilers, gas fires, cookers etc, do the necessary electrics such as a 'leccy shower

so to actually answer the question, its all the same trade as far as i know. i think id rather work on building sites then in the maintenance role, i like making stuff

Aye its a fair scope then. I'm very much more inclined to housebashing to be honest, I get into far to many fights on building sites mostly with chippies who somehow seem to think that there "trade" trumps whatever I'm doing.

IMO if you feel that your hair is a hindrance for you to be successful, I say cut the damn hair. Hair is nothing compared to your future. F*ck, hair will easily grow back again and can redo all this process again in the future. Can you feed your family and yourself w/ your hair? We all know dreadlocks is not so acceptable in most companies. Lets be realistic here. I work on a corporate setting and everytime I need to apply for another job, I cut my dreads 80% of the time and just regrow them after. I choose to sacrifice my hair now instead of sacrificing my future. I can easily get a job w/out cutting my hair by being a bartender or whatnot but I want to settle someday, give my future family a good life and bartending won't help me achieve that.

Here in US we're already in the mid-end part of slowdown tons of banks already closed big investment banks destroyed, housing market obliterated, tons of forclosure, establishments going out of business, lots of guys losing their jobs. And guess what? Slowdown in EU is just starting. It might get worst there. The last time I check your central bank refused to cut rates.

    -Peace

THat was addressed for the original poster. Some prefer to remain jobless and have dreads some don't. And I respect your view/opinion.
