Do any of you actually live in Amsterdam?

Prankster, you really do need to get out of holland and see some of the world. I've said it before and i'll say iy again: there is a large portion of the dutch community that feels perfectly justified in passing judgement on other countries (esp. USA), based on nothing more than what they read in the highly biased dutch media (which is every bit as bad as fox news, although in holland you don't have real alternatives).

I am not from the US but I have spent significant amounts of time all other the country. Before my first visit to the US I had little desire to travel there (based mainly on what I'd seen on tv and on what i assumed it'd be like). When I actually spent some time there, it became apparent that the reality is quite different. Sure, there are parts of the US that are really fucked up (eg. the south), but for the most part the US is a very friendly place (at least the people are friendly).

Multiculturalism is alive and well in many American cities and whats more, it's doing a hell of a lot better than it is in Holland! I would urge all dutch people with biases against the US to travel to somewhere like New York or California (you can fly there very cheaply from Schiphol these days). By all means hate the US government , but don't hate the people. Look at the dutch governement and imagine what they'd do if given as much power as the US! I don't think the world would survive it.

During my last year in Holland, I actually had to travel to the US twice to escape from all the tension in the netherlands and europe as a whole at the moment. Dutch people have become used to living in a repressed and hostile environment over the last decade. Holland used to be a free and tolerant place but that's no longer the case.

Go to New york and see all the different cultures and races getting along together in a small place before you say that it can't be done. You'll see cab drivers stopping on the side of the road to lay their prayer mats out on the kerb facing mecca, along side men in full jewish attire right next to Paris Hilton wannabes. I was shocked and refreshed by the lack of hositility. Everything I had thought that I knew about the US was a lie.

That said, there is much wrong with the US also, but no more so than with the netherlands.

 

The only city were I wanna go is San Francisci and that costs around the 800 or may be 1000 euro's. And that is only the plainticket. Damn Is that plain flying on liquid gold or something.

i flew amsterdam - los angeles (same distance as SF) for 390 Euro with taxes.

i also flew amsterdam - nyc for 299 Euro.

 

i have never been to san francisco but i highly recommend new york city.


i heard there is a secret society in nyc that is so old that the meetings are still held in dutch. it is descended from some merchant group or something.

 

When i 'bash' the US i also just state facts, about your government, about certain policies, about certain things ive also heard from Americans i know. Yet its called bashing. You didnt just state facts, with those facts you gave the impression that you were saying 'the US is better'.

In America it is all about Materialism. People kill for their money and their carreer. Their was this murdercase. A girl murdered a friend of hers because she was competition in a cheerleader team. That is America. If you are poor or you have not achieved something, then your nothing. And that attitude is now shipped overseas.

The americanisation has made Europe a more violent place, for example a lot of the American tv shows that show a lot of violence, murder etc.
