people can call me whatever they like.

Being offended really means nothing to me. What does offense accomplish? "OH MY GOD I'm so offended!" Yeah, so what, get over it...

If you do nothing with it except wallow in it, then I agree, being offended is a waste of energy. On the other hand, if you recognize where the emotion is coming from - "Warning: this person is being inappropriately familiar with me" - than that is useful information.

Of course, the use of pet names by strangers has to be viewed in a cultural context. In the Canadian Maritimes, it is normal for adult females to address everyone of either gender as "dear". In that case, it has nothing to do with inappropriate familiarity. It is just a cultural norm.

I had 2 grandfathers both of whom were horrible with names. One would just go down through the list of everybody he knew and would stop at your name when he found it. The other would just call everybody sweetheart. I preferred the latter. And yes I am a man.

I am slowly exiting the age where I can call everybody dude. I really can't wait for the "Sweetheart" years to start.

I think what hangs people up so much in terms of "pet names" for strangers is that they can't seem to separate the word from the intent. The point I was trying to make in my original post was there are worse things that you can be called so Honey, or Sweetheart, or Sweetie all seem pretty innocuous to me.

I could see how it would make some people mad, I usually only say it to be condescending.

    ^^^^^This...

OP should take a toke and fucking RELAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Somebody calling you a name meant to convey affection is no reason to even think about responding with negative energy, much less violence.

Feminism and this PC bullshit is driving you bitches crazy! (j/k):p

Well I don't mind the endearments so much, but what REALLY annoys me is strange men coming up to me on the street and demanding that I smile! I really do feel like decking them one!

I'm not a feminist. I just don't like men I don't know trying to win me over with pet names.

And for the love of god, I'm not going to punch anyone in the face. It's an expression.

well say what you mean and mean what you say.
either way, using an expression about punching someone in the face doesnt fit with being in a thread about hippies relating. rather, it belongs in a thread about death metal or people who hate everything.

Maybe you should move out of Texas, since it's basically a Southern thing. I always call women I barely know, baby, sweetie and honey, never had a complaint, and a lot of women seem to expect it.

You can always move to California or New England where they'll call you bitch or ho and would rather let the door slam in your face than hold it for you.

Many women, especially where I work, call me "hun, sweetie, love, dear," etc. and I don't like it. If you're going to call me a cute name, you'd better be willing to blow me.

As for calling women cute names, I prefer, "sugar tits," and "broad,"...

I wish someone would call me sugar tits at least once in my life. Is that too much to ask?
