I was born in the 80's so I missed the "good times" with hippies. However, I live in an area that's highly populated with hippies, and a lot of young people who think they are hippies because they smoke pot and have dreads. From what I have experienced, real hippies are not gross. They are down to earth, laid back people who understand that the "Real world" isn't necessarily the "real world". People who get that you should live a life that makes you happy. I've never encountered a heroin addict hippie. Maybe some people who fell through the cracks along the ways. More or less, they have just gotten a bad rap due to the wrong kinds of people from that time i.e. Charles Manson, and a lot of the guerilla groups that went about things the wrong way sometimes. Hippies are peaceful people, and the kind of people whom I wish there were more of today.
A friend of mines husband passed away a year ago. Lots of older hippie's were at the funeral. The had a commune near Bloomington back in the 70's and still had cookouts over the years. She told me stories about how they grew weed as big as Christmas trees and that the women would work jobs and the guys stayed home. lol It definitely sounded like a different time. I could feel something real about the hippies I met. They are in their 50's and 60's and still committed to their ideas and values.
