Do You Consider Yourself Narrow Minded....or Not?

I didn't read it that way, of find it to mean complacency. More like counting your blessings instead of whining about every little thing. I know people like that and they are tiring to be around, they drain me.

Exactly. No one is completely open minded even when they claim to be. And some that claim to be...call everyone else narrow minded. Ya got the point!

 

Yes. And just look at the issues among our citizens....racism...religious arguments...no respect for one another. Not to be a conspiracy theorist but I believe our Gov wants this....divide and conquer. Think what a strong nation we could be if people could respect and understand our differences and move forward together instead of all this infighting. Then people like the Kim Davis of the country...would be shunned for that behavior instead of looking like some hero.

 

i dont know if i'm open minded so much as very empathetic which makes it a lot easier to understand someone's journey and the challenges they face in life.

 

Me too....but all sides whether I agree with them or not. Everyone has had their own little personal hell to live through, bible thumpers as well as everyone else.

You certainly can't call me narrow minded that's for sure, my thinking is based on a life time of experience which wasn't easy to come by.

 

As humans we have tendencies to behave in ways that are irrational and to view the world through a limited sphere of experience. Open-mindedness is not a natural state,but you can aspire towards it, and its a very noble aspiration.

It comes easier to some than it does to others, experience makes it easier but only gets you so far. At some point you really need to make a conscious decision and effort to recognize your own limitations and try and see outside of them.

 

Open mindedness is a type of narrow mindedness as you are willing to ignore certain characteristics becuase they arent important to you

Apathy and tolerance can have the same effect as bigotry.

Indeed. Not exactly how I would say it, but point well made. And exactly why the"road to hell is paved with good intentions".
You have to be open enough as to not limit your thinking in one direction, or subjectively...but wise enough to know when something is wrong whether you like it or not.
Example "enlightened" groups shouting down a speaker because they disagree with his/her opinion.

 

The vietnam war is a great example

The vietnamese were the ones that ended up putting a stop to Pol Pot, and he and what happened in that neighbouring county only came in to being from the vacuum created by the war. No one understood, gave a shit, or wanted to interfer with Cambodia.

Basically, all those hippies protesting involvement in vietnam were also at least partly responsible for Cambodia, second biggest geneocide of last century. No one fuckin did anything under the pretence of peace and tolerance

 

American Civil war too, if the rest of the world had coughed up enough money at the time to buy out those farmers and southern states, could have ended slavery without a whole bunch of rednecks getting killed. Not that it was really about slavery

I'm not open minded at all, concerning conservative thinking and conservative actions politically. As far as peoples personal lives, I could not care less what people do, short of causing harm to others.
