Not so much anymore, because I'm broke, but when I first got out of the army, I got off the bus in ATL and gave out probably $100 to homeless people within ~30 minutes or so, and even bought one of them some food and let him keep the change. I was homeless before that, so I had an idea of how they felt, but a few years after that, I was homeless in ATL and found out EGGZAKLY how it felt to be in their shoes. Being homeless sucks, especially in ATL, and I never second guess myself when it comes to giving away some money I can spare. Hell, they'll most likely use it to buy some alcohol or drugs, which is exactly what I'd use it for, so why not spread the wealth? lol

Haha, right? When I was 14 years old, my very first boyfriend and I were "dragging Main" on a Friday night after a football game and some guy came up to the window at a stop sign and asked us to donate to the "Get me even more fucked up foundation". A worthy cause indeed. I like honesty...and I also have shithead friends who'd probably do that. lol

Definitely a worthy cause. In fact, it's my favorite charity.

Sort of a different take than me. So 50% might blow it on booze - 50% might spend it on food - for themselves or their family. So just don't give to anybody because 50% might buy MD20-20?
And actually we don't know the story behind the 50% boozers - hell, they might need it, or deserve it, we don't know.

I stop at a light where there is beggars almost everyday on my way home from work. In my car I have something I like to call my ''hobo fund''. It's basically just a change jar. If I see new street peeps. I give them money. I've theyve been there for a few months, I stop. I'll give them my tuque and mitains if its really cold.

Recently, they broke in to my car while I was at work and stole my hobo fund change. It was for them anyways, but they took it all at once so they'll have to wait til' I make a new one!

Ick Shivaya - that would make me pretty angry, but I'm so impressed that such a bad experience will not stop you from giving! Many people do not have that kind of spine!

Funnily enough, the only time our car was ever broken into was by a crackhead that lives at the apartment complex down the street. All we had in the car was about 50 cents and the motherfucker took it anyways! :p He ran pretty fast when he got caught.

I rarely see any respond disappointed. 95% of the homeless people I see downtown every week say either, "god bless you," or "have a great day," when people have nothing to give them. They're pretty damn humble.

There's a few who have pets as well. One guy has a kitten and a dog, another has a dog. One guy reads books like they're going out of style. I've noticed that a lot more people are willing to give change to these people as they seem to mostly spend it on feeding their pets or buying books.

meh, I forgot to lock my doors... I don't know, it doesnt bother me too much for some reason. They were kind enough to leave all my cd's and stuff. With all the money I blow on shit I don't need, the 2-3$ they stole in change doesn't mean much to me.

    lol @ your story haha

i don't, the majority of the people in my town are giving asbo's for begging now - they are just abusive, and want money for drugs.

those who may need the money can be falsely mistaken for these idiots - but there you go.

Not to mention the UK has a record number of drunks, especially in public. How is one to differentiate between a homeless person, and some drunk who has a home who simply wants more beer?

our town doesnt have any panhandlers or homeless people...probably because there is few services...definitely no place to sleep like a shelter...i know that welfare will give you a night in a motel and a bus ticket out of town if you are in dire straights....i dont mean if you are a band member in dire straights cause those dudes have dough...lol...

sometimes, if im in the right mindset, i do give a homeless person a couple bills, or some coinage. Often times i do not and i feel bad because they are less fortunate. As the OP said, i really dont know why they are there and what they are going to do with the money...but still.

I always hear people say "They'll just spend it on booze"

Well who cares if they do? The point is is that if they want to buy a meal then they can.

No I never ever give money to bums for the simple fact that I know they are gonna spend it on bullshit. I will however buy them some food, I've done it several times. I have even sat down at McDonalds with a lady and her dirty ass kids bought them food and ate with them. They were very grateful.

Believe me, I know where you're coming from - I got needs of my own - why give it to someone who might blow it.
Everybody thinks giving is a good thing - Let's look at the word "give". Does give come with ropes attached - after we give do we have the right to monitor the money - at that point it is no longer a gift.
Whether giving is productive for the other person - who knows - but it is certainly good for you.
We give to all kind of good causes where most of the money goes to paper pushers and professional collectors.
Why not go straight to the potential need and leave out the accountants.
