Do you think text messages are rude?

I'm not too bothered about the cost of texting. If you live in the UK, you can get texts for 5p each, or 5 free a day (then 12p for every additional text), or if you use your mobile for talking, you can get free texts anyway.

I just find it offensive when my so-called "friend" is supposed to be spending quality time with me but he's talking to these mystery people silently while we're talking.

The only reason I don't tell him I think it's rude is because he's a very sensitive person and he's been depressed lately, so I don't want to say anything that might upset him. There are so many things that upset him. Even stuff that makes no sense, like he doesn't like it when you make any kind of suggestion ("as in, you really should see this movie... it's great"). He feels like you're being bossy and "commanding" him to watch it.

Frankly, he is a pain to deal with at times and totally unlike all my other friends. All my other friends are very easy to get on with and respect me, and say encouraging things (like mates should). And then this guy is always like the opposite of that. But we've known each other 20 years, and there are some things about him I really like. So...

Wow! I'm really waffling on, huh?

You people have really high expectations for your friends.

I really don't mind at all. A 30-second gap in a conversation isn't exactly a huge deal, and if my friends weren't rude, well I probably wouldn't hang out with them.
