I remember seeing something about this in the religion forum. And I really don't know if I've decided yet. I mean...they're clearly insane, maybe they should be locked up in an asylum rather than a prison. And the rest of their kids should definitely be placed under different care, but constitutionally, I don't think there's any charges that could really be brought against them. As Adam argued, some people trust only in Western medicine, some trust only in prayer. They chose the second and obviously found out they were wrong.

I agree, this is not a black and white situation, and I think I agree with Fitzy above all the other answers, we don't know anything but what a news story tells us. Since when do we trust the media??? They could've blown that story way the fuck out of proportion. Until I hear more about it, I'm not deciding one way or the other.

Also, I think having your kid DIE is pretty bad punishment. But that's just me.

This thread is amazing, I can't believe that people are actually defending these sons of a bitch.

We don't know anything from what a news story tells us, but it's all we know and all we can base our judgment on. Debunking something because it's on the news doesn't really leave room for any discussion about anything that's on the news, now does it?

We probably won't ever hear any more about the story. The news moves too fast for that... this is pretty much all we have to judge, and judge I shall.

The people in this thread who have said that they would have not taken their child to the doctor if the child demonstrated the same symptoms for a month are sick and should have their children (or potential future children) taken away from them.

I'm an adult, and I still go to the doctor if I feel like shit for over a week, because something may be wrong... and it's usually very easy to fix it with anti-biotics (or insulin in this case). There is no excuse for not taking the child to the doctor. Makeveli can try and delude the meaning of "neglegence", yet I don't see how you can possibly separate it from this case.

Delude the meaning? Not one bit. Neglegence is a very specific word that implies lack of attention. There is no evidence that they ignored their child, the childs symptoms, or the childs needs. How they addressed those problems and needs is everybodys issue here, is it not? We define words for a reason. Those definitions confine the word to certain meanings. You guys would like to expand that meaning to include poor judgement calls apparently.

Nobody has tied the world neglegence to these parents as cleary as I have eliminated as an argument. You just keep stating that it's obvious or common sense, yet I am not the only one who disagrees with that assessment. Which means it's not as clear cut as you guys keep stating it is. Many of us have gone in depth to explain why we feel they were within their rights.

The opposers to this argument would simply continue stating that the side I have chosen is "simply wrong" and doesn't need to be debated. Famous words of a confused opposition, if you ask me.

They ignored the child's symptoms by not addressing them properly.

I don't see how it could get any more simple.

"to be remiss in the care or treatment of (remiss means being carless or slow in performing ones duties)"

"They ignored the child's symptoms by not addressing them properly"

    Also can be said as

"They ignored the child's symptoms by addressing them incorrectly"

Which is an oxymoron. To address something, in any manner, means you have not ignored it. Underestimated, undervalued, and handled poorly are all things that would fit if one chose, but neglected is not.

I dont' see how that could get any more simple. They chose to HANDLE IT differently than you would have HANDLED IT, but they still gave ATTENTION where attention was due. Either way, it wasn't ignored and your admission that they did it wrong proves that.

Careless or slow in performing ones duties. There was no mention of them showing signs of either description in the CARE they CHOSE TO ADMINISTER.

They just didn't administer the same care you would have. Still negates the word neglegent. Period.

Stupid....idiotic.... naive..... ridiculous..... all acceptable identifiers of the actions of these parents, based on opinion, but neglegence does not fit, by its own definition.

Acknowledging the fact that the symptoms existed doesn't mean that they did not ignore them. Any idiot can realize that the girl is sick. That's not the way the law is phrased.

Ignoring the symptoms would be not attempting to make them go away. That's negligence.

...and no, the prayer does not constitute as an attempt...

Key word in that definition is "treatment". Since when is prayer considered treatment?

Plus, me and many other people have given you plenty of arguments that weren't it's "just wrong"- in fact, I never said it was wrong but explained why over and over again.

What I am saying people is NOT that these parents did the right thing. If you noticed I never said I agreed with their decision or would make the same decision in their shoes.

What I did say was they have the fundemental right to act as they did, and they will suffer the consequence of a poor decision for the rest of their natural lives.

Do you really think anything the court can do to them is going to matter? Talk about kicking a dog while it's down. For fucks sake people, you want them to get some probation with dead kid? Maybe six months in the slammer to think about the lost child they will be thinking about for the rest of their lives?

I DO understand everybody's anger here, but I do not understand everybody's need to punish and condemn some parents who have already lost more than most people will ever have to understand.

    That is all.

Those people are not fit to be parents. Their other children should be taken away. The parents should be locked up for at least a couple of years.

Beating a dead dog? Those people practically killed their child... they deserve the most severe punishment the law can provide. Let it serve as an example for other idiots out there.

Treatment is any act of handling a person or situation, and while it does have a sub definition that includes medicinal care, it is but one out of many definitions.

The definition of remiss does not include the word MEDICAL before treatment, negating your argument that not taking her to the doctor means they didn't treat her.

I said most. Not everything is directed at or about you, ya know. ;) There are a lot of people who have passed judgement with nothing else to offer.

And I was under the impression that you and I had agreed to disagree. ;)

What other kind of treatment is there? Take the child to the priest and have him anally cleans her?

Honestly... you don't need "Medical" to be written before "treatment" to know that the two are interwined.

The only treatment that could have saved this girl's life was medical. Give me a break.

Personally, I really think anybody who has no children of their own needs to shut the fuck up.

Like I said, everybody is a child expert until they have their own.

Really? Cause the word treatment has dozens of uses and varying meanings. Medical treatment is just ONE of numerous examples.

You guys are really just pulling at anything aren't you?

So, you are suddenly an expert because you've had a child for what, two months?

And, yes, that is just stupid but somehow I was waiting for it anyways.
