******: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word (Paperback) by Randall Kennedy Thanks fitzy I'll check it out I am a sucker for a sale and its only $6.35!
i think, within giving the context of the climate of the times, and knowing fitz as we do, explaining it to a french woman with no real historical feel for the hideous nastiness, it was fully appropriate. ESPECIALLY considering the assholes hanging nooses are STILL using it. sometimes a slap in the face is the best way to get a point across.
sure there is, but they're not called "niggers." doesn't that word make you feel like you just chomped down on some fabric or something? like it makes your teeth hurt?
I suppose so, I mean, I know she would understand, I perhaps should have worded myself differently. I wasn't sure if she would have been FAMILIAR with the term, though she might be. no doubt there is too much racism all over the world. It is a shame, but maybe someday....maybe things will be different.
well, the little fuckers pulling this shit are still running around calling black people niggers just like they were doing during the lynchings. makes me wonder how long it's be before we see another black man dragged behind a truck until his body is left in pieces? the lynching mentality isn't entirely in the past. i'm sure those little assholes think it makes them manly and badass to fling around "******," like it makes them cool in some backwards way. nah, i say show how ugly it is again and again and again. let them see the disgust.
That is why the word makes my skin craw...because it is not in the past, and I am afraid it may be in our future as well.
did you encounter much of that in Tennessee? i am sure people would think the stereotype of the state is that way, but i have my doubts there are many issues there maybe i have an idealized view of the place
people will always be people. even if we were ALL a nuetral skin tonel we'd find a reason to fuck each other up.
In the real low class areas, it is still an issue, that word is thrown around in McDonald's every day. But the MAJORITY of the state is not like that I don't believe. Most of the assholes who feel that way were raised to feel the way they do, and are not just against blacks, but against ANYONE who isn't like them. I have seen some trashy people who discriminated against anyone who didn't drive a pickup and work construction. Most of the people I have known in Tennessee are not like that at all though.
my dad lives in tennessee, still. he's one of those guys who always says he hates black men but 90% of his friends are black and telling him to STFU. i don't quite get it. i do know that shit is WAY more segregated than when i was a child, in entertainment and in real life. i don't understand. when i was growing up, 2/3 of my class was black, latino, pacific islander, etc. now i take my daughter to gymnastics and it's a SEA of blondes and the only black show on tv is girlfriends or some bullshit. remember growing up, watching sanford and son, good times, what's happenin', even diff'rent strokes and the cosby show (ok, yeah, i know, but still, they were PHYSICALLY black and phylicia rashad was HOT). where'd all the good shit go? WTF happened?
black men turn to goo for my mom. but then, so do most men. and not in a "she's so hot" way, but in a "garsh, ma'am, i didn't see you there? can i get the door and have you back me a chicken pot pie?"
