Yeah see, you're talking about the principle, like I said. We're talking strictly about the KKK here, theoretically, if only, only the KKK had their rights taken away, what would be your objection then?
But, you can't do that. If any one group is stripped of its Civil Liberties, that opens the way for even more people to be oppressed. I mean, you try not to be hypocritical, most of the time, right? Why take from one, and give to the rest? That leads to hatred, anger, disease, and genocide.
You can't just take away one group's rights, that sets the precedent that it can be done to anyone the government doesn't agree with. Remember Germany, in 1933 the nazis took away the rights of the communist party, and it was only supposed to be the communist party after the Reichstag fire, you know, only the communist party.
Everyone should have the right to free speach including those with such blantently evil aims as them, but its up to us as Hippies & free thinkers to Educate the young/elder vunerable persons that these people target ie- the disaffected youth, the unemployed etc as to the real aims and objectives of these groups, and that is to spread hatred among the human race(check out Hitler in the 30s& 40s,you will soon get the idea!).There is no place in a peaceful loving universe for people such as these, they belong in another dimension together with all the other forces of darkness. Peace & Love
It sounds like it's more just fear, you guys aren't even talking about the KKK, you're talking about yourselves.
Because taking away one groups free speech sets the precedent for everyone elses and anyone who doesn't think so has a horrible grasp of the history of the 20th century
Id prefer groups like KKK and Christianity to not have parades, advertising, exc. Or at least have a contradicting group nearby for each one with proper law enforcement to keep them from ripping each other a part.
You've got to protect free speech no matter what. If you don't like what someone says, you don't have to listen.
Yes, in the United States we all have and deserve freedom of speech. Was it Voltaire that said "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it."? Well said, Frenchy. I remember when I was a kid and I heard that the town of Gainesville, Georgia was going to cancel their Christmas Parade because the KKK wanted to enter a float with the theme "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas". I thought that was just horrible, but my parents explained to me why it had to be like that. I gotta give props to the Missouri Department of Transportation. You don't normally see much creativity or thought in any level of government. I mean, is the US of A ever better off than when Congress is on vacation?? But somebody in Jefferson City is smart and has a sense of humor. The KKK signed up to volunteer to clean up a highway. So the DOT gave them Rosa Parks Highway. And the skinheads wanted to volunteer as well, so the DOT gave them a highway named after some rabbi. I think that is just brilliant.
For some interesting insight into Freedom of Speech in the UK as well as a look at how much McDonald's SUCKS watch McLibel. Good movie.
In the future, when the events of today are found only in history books, it will be quite a difficult task to understand the context of writings from this period based on the definitions of words coming from the left or the right.
Unless what they say directly contributes to bodily harm of an individual or group, you gotta defend it at all costs.
everyone has a 'right' to say what they damd well please. as long as i have a right not to have to listen to them say it.
EVERYONE has the RIGHT to freedom of speech. Even the KKK. I can't stand the KKK, but they still have every damn right to have their voices heard. Even if what they say is terrible and hateful. We have FREEDOM OF SPEECH to combat that as well.
