it seems that I need PNP transistors and all I have is NPN ones, I think there has to be a way to connect the NPN transistor to make it work but my electrical engineering knowledge is pretty limited. it works when i susbstitute the seven segment display with a regukar LED, connecting the cathode to GND and anode to the emitter so it must have something to do with the fact that the cathodes from the display are connected to open drain outputs on the shift register and I cant seem to wrap my head around how that ground is different from a nirmal ground when the storage register output is high. the software works though, only tricky oart with that was coming up with a table of 8-bit values to send the shift register to display certain character which meant tediously counting segments and reasoning about which segments should be lit to display each character, and then scribbling down hexadecimal values on a peice of paper for each character. it seems everyone uses PNP transistors to switch the anode current ... but some people online are assholes and think they are so much better than you just because you had to ask a question about a transistor or an open drain. in the software world a 1 is a 1, a 0 is a 0 but in hardware world things get confusing when you have to deal with current source vs current sink, and whether you need a pullup/pulldown resistor to get the pin to take the logic states you need.

obviously they are superior to me in every way ...

 

From my experience back in the Fuzzbox days, no, it doesn't work that way... Unless you are only using two legs (I.E. as a diode)

I pretty much confirmed that no .. it doesnt if theres a way to to do it i dont know what it is. i have to multiplex the display so need a way to switch the anodes in sequence else it would require too many I/O lines. right now, the same thing gets displayed on all four digits, so tomorrow i should probably go to radioshack and get some PNP transistors. radioshack doesnt have the stuff they used to it seems

yeah, that lol. it just seemed like they used to have a lot more interesting geeky stuff and now only have a small subset of what they used to. it was a long time ago, and I was young though so maybe it's just my imagination ...

This 7-segment displays data sheet has table, at the top of the table it says "LED Chip Electircal & Optical Chara Queristics:" .. i didnt' make a typo, that's what it says .. fuckin chinese shit at the top. I wonder if they used google translate?
