Well fuckin A ... I just bricked my ATTiny2313a microcontroller trying to program the fuse bytes to use an external crystal as a clock source. Now it can't be programmed because its programmed for a clock source that it doesn't have. I have a second one, if I programmed it to generate a square wave I could use that as a clock source and possibly be able to program the bricked on again but I don't wanna solder anything right now and the ISP headers from the programmer won't go into a breadboard without having to make some kind of adapter. I just make a small circuit board with an IC socket to plug it into, but if I have to use a second microcontroller to generate a clock source idk ... it's tedious as fuck and I don't wanna waste any components doing something that only might work, and has a good chance of not working .. which would be really disappointing after all the effort and flux fumes breathed :/ i'll probably try it later, once I know for sure what went wrong.

I don't have to wait to know it's not working ... i just gotta wait until I feel like taking a shot in the dark to try and fix it. it's something to do with the clock signal source being configured wrong. without a proper clock signal the chip won't run or execute code, and without a clock signal you can't program it anymore either because it won't run so its a sort of chicken or egg problem. idk, my knowledge is pretty basic when it comes to the hardware realm of electrical engineering. on a PC, you have an operating system that protects the memory and you can't do anything truly evil, worst that can usually happen is a segfault or data getting corrupted. with hardware stuff and embedded chips, there is no operating system, whatever code you write is the only code and anything is possible including screwing up the chip.

yeah, you could brick a PC with code too, but it would be something like BIOS code that would brick the motherboard. normal programs in userspace usually can't screw anything up so bad that reinstalling the operating system won't fix it.

Pretty sure I know what went wrong, just don't really know yet what the right solution is and don't wanna brick the other chip I have. Everything worked fine until I tried changing the clock source to an external crystal, I've never done that before. Only reason I need to do it is because the internal clock isn't very accurate, it has up to 10% error. The chip has an 8MHz clock, but could be off up to 10%, so it could be like 7.2MHz or 8.8Mhz. The chip won't function without a clock signal.

 

i don't understand variation in the clock is that common is it inferior or just a matter of connections and is it a pulse or ping, I mean what kind of texture. tick tick hard like that or a a wire or is it just a name
