    ‘Make America Great Again’

What ‘great’ bits have been lost?

Well I could present a few suggestions – but they would be my suggestions they’d be most definitely different from some other peoples.

But what are the Trump Republicans ideas?

Well reading around it is hard to actually pin things down but here are three things that seem to crop up.

    The American Dream

Trump Republicans (TR) seem to want Americans to have jobs again, so that the American Dream, the idea that if you ‘work hard’ you will do well, can return.

The problem is that the American Dream never really existed for most people it’s more of a myth than a fact, a dream, and trying to re-instated a myth is an impossibility and giving the impression you can do so is just cruel.

Basically we are talking economics here and a lot of the economic problems that the US is facing are down to certain neo-liberal free markets economics whose dangers were long telegraphed but which many TR’s seem to have supported or at least voted for.

So wonderful they have realised their mistake and have fundamentally changed their economic think, well no, many still seem to support ‘free trade’ ideas but not want its effects which is impossible.

They seem to want neoliberalism within closed American borders, a free market nationalism that is going to be difficult if not impossible to sustain.

They seem to want the market to rule without government interference while also wanting ‘someone’ to stop the international market from causing them problems.

    Which leads on to –

    Good governance

There seems to be a desire amongst many Americans for a ‘better’ political system that can do things to improve the lives of ‘the people’.
But when was that, in the opinion of Trump supporters?

And again this seems contradictory because many TR’s seem to dislike the whole concept of Government; they want good governance without government, they seem to want someone to ‘take charge’ but seem unwilling to look at what is wrong with their governmental system, which they seem to despise - to me seems like a recipe for dictatorship.

It also should be noted that many TR’s voted for politicians that brought about the things they seem to despise about ‘The Government’

They seem to think Trump stands for hope and they hope he can fix things but there seems to be little understanding of what is ‘broke’ or in my opinion they wouldn’t be voting for Trump.

A leadership that could be respected

And this leads on to the question ‘then why are you voting for Trump’

Many TR’s seem don’t seem to want ‘politicians’ they want to vote for someone that ‘speaks the truth’ (and seem to confuse someone ‘speaking their mind’ for ‘truth’).

Well I’d say that in a democracy you get the politicians you vote for so the question is why have Americans voted for the politicians they have and why are so many of them voting for Trump?

I’d be interested to know how many of the people supporting Trump also voted for George W Bush or a tea party candidate.

Trump knows the 48 laws of power. Expect when the general election comes around for him to change his persona from what he portrayed himself as in the primaries.

Many of us do remember a time of great stability in large manufacturing companies, when they were always looking for qualified employees, and you were never going to get fired unless you did something terrible. They had jobs at all pay levels, to match your education and ability.

For many years, the only low wage exporting country that had the technology to compete with our manufacturing was Japan, and that country wasn't physically large enough to take over the marketplace. Nobody else in that part of the world had the technical knowledge base, the educational base, or the national infrastructure needed to be a world player like the US. Appropriate international shipping infrastructure was missing also. So, the US companies were mostly competing with each other.

Those days are never coming back, unless Trump plans to bomb China, South Korea, India, and several adjoining countries back into the rice and bamboo age. Imposing a 35% import tariff would simply mean that the US would become the only major country in the world where nobody would be able to afford to buy anything, and all export-related jobs would be lost, due to retaliation.

He's already won the primaries, but he isn't changing. That's what's freaking out the GOP leaders.

Ahh, but last night he used a teleprompter and gave a scripted speech that lacked any attacks on minorities, women, or Muslims.

It appears the GOP is beginning to rein him in. Mr. outsider, anti politician is learning how to kowtow to the GOP leaders and support the party platform.

I dont think he is toning it down to appease the GOP, I think he is trying to attract left of center voters who don't want to vote for Hillary.

He plays dumb but I actually think he's a brilliant politician in a scary fascist kind of way.

And Americans felt a sense of loyalty to the company they worked for (and we see how that worked out).

The bottom line is this, the economy has changed. Technological advances are making hands on jobs obsolete.
No matter what trump says, those jobs are not coming back.

Freaking unbelievable... even I did not think this election would be so bizarre, so insane, so entertaining... if you can stand the vitriol, hate and lies.

Donald says he plans to spend all next week bashing the Clintons, not talking about what he plans to do in office.

    Same old shit.

One of the Laws of Power is: Never outshine your master.

Another thing that goes along with this is that is often advantageous to appear less capable than one actually is; appearing not as a threat to be taken seriously, then at some moment when the time comes to destroy your enemy, crushing them thoroughly and completely.

Another of the Laws of Power is: Never Show Your True Colors. Never allow your enemies to know everything about you, or what your true capabilities may be.

Anyone interested in this sort of thing should read "The 48 Laws of Power", by Robert Greene.
Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends & Influence People" might also be an interesting read.

The two books above certainly seem very different, at least on the surface, but they are really not "that" different; they approach similar subject matter from different perspectives. The 48 Laws of Power also discusses how in many cases one's enemies are at least as equally valuable as one's allies; I forget whether or not this is mentioned, hinted at, or implied in some way in Carnegie's book

  12. If it becomes a question of is a country what its citizens allow their government to do, then it's very hard to call America great. Not when so many evil things are done in its name throughout the world. All this bullshit about America being great and moral is hideous propaganda that most people have swallowed whole, just like people will swallow propaganda. That's what good propaganda does, creates a false reality for you to exist in. One where you can say America is great because you aren't eating your next door neighbor, even though the bombs you just paid for are killing little children.

Hint: When Trump says "Make America Great Again" he's not talking about anything moral...

  14. He's just talking about people buying into the propaganda even more. Phony patriotism for people who can't even support their families, for people who can't afford health insurance or college.

    LOL

People are thinking way too deeply about Trump's campaign slogan "make America great again." It's noting more than an empty meaningless catchphrase like Obama's "Hope." "Change." "Yes we can" which are of equal meaning

I used to laugh The Donald off until a while ago but, not anymore. It's scary how this man(?) is winning so much support? [IMG] I mean c'mon! It's frustrating to see a buffoon being backed by more and more people each day! :bomb: Whatever happened to us? We should have taken a cue from The Apprentice but no.[IMG] This presidential election is the worst ever! It's akin to an annoying "reality" show. Only that this time, the country at stake. :argue: America deserves better and Trump can only get worse if he gets the post of one of the world's most powerful men. God save America! [IMG]

I'm not from the United States but Americans need to have more pride in the accomplishments of their civilization.

I would say the following things made America great:

-The development of flight by the Wright brothers
-Putting a man on the moon
    -Universal suffrage
    -Separation of church and state
    -Freedom of speech
-The U.S. constitution, while the rest of the world were still under monarchies
    -The development of the automobile
    -Defeating the soviet union
-The rise in the standard of living for the average worker.
    -The Steam engine
    -The development of the internet
-The development of the modern computer

America was an industrial, cultural, and scientific tour the force up until the last 30 or so years but is now in decline. Yes they've committed many injustices but so has every single nation and civilization. Most civilizations have committed far worse atrocities than the United States. Open any history book on any nation and you'll see that the pages are soaked in blood.

You think the Mongols were innocent? They conquered half of Europe, most of Asia, and left a trail of blood in their path

You think the Islamic caliphates whom the Mongols defeated were innocent? They spread their religion with swords and forced conversions. Turkey was under Christian hands 600 years ago. Spain was almost conquered by the Moors. Vienna was nearly conquered by the Ottomans.

You think the Byzantine and Roman empires were innocent?

How about the Japanese empire that killed millions of Chinese during WW2.

    How about the Aztecs?

The pages of history are soaked in blood. I'm not exonerating the many crimes of the United States so much as I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of most people. Rejoicing at the fall of American civilization is short-sighted because there are many regimes far more brutal than the United States waiting in the wings.

But I must correct a few things:

The first self powered vehicle was developed in France, the first production automobile was developed in Germany.
The first practical steam engine was developed in England.
Universal suffrage is granting the right to vote to all citizens. France was the first to have male universal suffrage in 1792, the U.S. in 1870 (1965 in the South). New Zealand was the first to give women universal suffrage in 1893, the U.S gave women the right in 1920.
Athens and Rome had freedom of speech.
Rome had freedom of religion for the most part, until the Christians came along and tried to ban all other religions anyway.
