I was a big Donovan fan back in the 60's and 70's. I remember he got a lot of criticism at first from people who thought he copied Dylan. He wrote lots of fine songs and had a very pleasant singing voice. My favorite album was "For Little Ones", which was part of the "Flower to a Garden" package. All the songs were written for children. They were gentle, lovely songs with just an acoustic guitar. I still vividly remember so many images from them. What great songs they were. The Song of the Naturalist's Wife ... Widow With Shawl ... The Starfish on the Toast ... The Mandolin Man ... Isle of Islay. Just thinking of those songs again gives me goosebumps.
Yeah, it's like the opposite of what they used to say about the U.S. bands copying the Fab 4 (eg. the Monkees!)
I never really thought Donovan was trying to copy Dylan. I mean Donovan was just singing folk music in a Scottish, English accent. Kinda unfair.
