LOL, here... http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/impaired/penalties.shtml and people still drink and drive here... This was why I wanted to know what you thought was a suitable punishment that would actually accomplish something. To give you an idea of what you are facing, I know a guy who before the current laws came into effect, had 47 DUI charges over the span of 30 years... When the laws were changed to include lifetime suspensions of license to drive, it didn't include the previous years. So it took him a year or two to make it back up to his third offense. He lost his license, and will never ever get it back... (keep in mind all the fines and jail time that came along before and during this time) and you know what? He STILL DRINKS AND DRIVES... So, I ask again... what punishment do you suggest, because the ones you just did, are nothing compared to what we have here right now (which have nothing to do with commiting any other offense at the same time and they don't solve a damned thing.
yeah, i don't claim to know exactly what is actually a suitable punishment, i just pulled those out of my ass because you asked for an example. also, i know that no potential punishment will actually stop people from doing what they are going to do. i just think that the focus is currently on the wrong thing; driving impaired is certainly an issue, but most of the actual danger comes from people that drink and then drive recklessly, and i think that the recklessness factor should be weighed at least as heavily as the impairedness factor.
Fair enough... lol I will agree that the focus should be on if you fuck up otherwise WHILE being drunk, but the point still stands... short of death or life imprisonment, there are ZERO laws that would stop people from doing it if they want to. You can't depend on people using common sense, most people don't have it to start with, and those that do, quickly lose it after they have been drinking for a while. So, laws and common sense don't work... What's left? Also, keep in mind, this is just about drinking... there is still the whole wack of other impairments to deal with, some legal, some illegal.
I get where your coming from, and I think it is a brilliant idea. blanket restrictions against anything breed contempt for law, authority, guidance, and breed recklessness. instead we should simply regulate drinking and driving. giving people the option to drive with a higher BAC, but emphasize the rules of the road will lead to a higher degree of personal autonomy, and therefore higher degrees of personal responsibility and accountability
Sure it's wrong if you're actually impaired, but I can have one drink and be over the legal limit and I'm pretty sure that after one drink I can still drive better and am more alert than 95% of the people on the road. They also need to come up with something more accurate than a breathalyzer to test your levels.
I don't know much about drunk driving. But speaking of tests, I do remember a scene in an old Steve Martin movie where he got pulled over (I think by the police in Germany) for a sobriety test. He was required to stand upside-down and hop on one hand while singing the German National Anthem (or something like that). At the end he said, "Damn your drunk driving tests are tough!" .
Someone I know got busted for DUI and it happened while he was taking his buddy home who was also drunk. One of the lights was out on his car which attracted the police, not to mention it was about 2 am. He had to serve a mandatory jail sentence, lost his license for about 30 days, had to take a bunch of counseling classes. He also lost his job because of it. A real mess. .
I'll have a beer or two socially, hang out for a while and drive home. I would never do more than that, because it is a risk that will impair your ability while steering a couple thousand pounds of steel at 70 miles an hour. Beyond that, no matter how competent you feel, your reaction and judgment is impaired, and you are a danger. I lost someone I really cared for because of a drunk driver. I also work with several people who are in prison (work release) because of DUI homicide. One of 'ems a really good guy and a friend. I really hope those of you try it get pulled over next time.
I haven't read this whole thing.. I'm just going to say.. drunk driving makes me so angry. I have a family member who does it a lot. He/she is an idiot. Oh it drives me crazy. It's not just the fact they are risking THEIR life it's the fact they could hurt other people.. especially other family members who are with them. Sometimes my life. I know I have the choice to not get in the car.. but half the time that means I would be stranded somewhere far away, and that's not a fight I'm going to make. (I'm ill myself - epilepsy, so me driving is just about as bad as a drunk driver.) One thing about it that annoys me more than anything is when they drive with an open drink in the car.. God how annoying. This certain family member just happens to be a pretty important member in our community as well. If they get caught my family is going to loose EVERYTHING. I moved out recently but I'm constantly worrying about my other family members and all the shit that's going on.. I don't understand how anyone ever thinks it's alright to drive after they've been drinking. I do think some people know their limits.. I'm not saying you can't have a few drinks and drive home.. but once you've got a buzz.. for God's sake don't fucking drive.
Yeah dude drunk driving is stupid. Driving on lsd is way safer (1 hit is safer than 4 beers I think) But yeah, I drove drunk as fuck one time getting out of a concert, and was driving 4 people lol, I ran over a curb because I didn't know there was a curb there. I fuckin broke my oil pan. You know what though, I would have hit that curb even if I was sober because it was in the middle of a fuckin parking lot like noone would ever expect. But yeah 3 beers is the limit for driving now for me.
my cousin was driving on acid and started talking about the palm tree coming out of the hood.. I think I'll put my bets on 4 beers
Lol. driving on acid is easy for me, I just think that I am a proffesional race car driver, and the rest comes naturally.
his dose was probably strong as fuck. it came in vials from Miami dripped onto sugar cubes. we were drunk, stoned and on speed too. who knows
Yeah dude, one of the best things about it is that it is easy if you are comfortable driving. 2 hits I would not be comfortable driving I imagine lol. But yeah driving on shrooms is way more dangerous, I tried it before, and the whole road was moving left and right it was sketchy but still was fun to try. Lsd + thc = drivers heaven
