I prefer to eat veggie...tis easier for me. However, if I've arrived somewhere and they serve up some carcass, I am not one to turn it away.
i eat all sorts of stuff. i prefer to get the meat myself, or not at all. at the very least, buy organic, free range meats. i can't eat soy, nor can my daughters, though my husband loves all that stuff. meats been hard to come by, for financial reasons. mainly we eat chicken now with our veggies. i've been eating way too much bready stuff, makes me feel wretched. i suppose for veggies and fruits, i prefer raw.
I have been veggie sinve 1976. We are a veggie household but we also take B12, hemp seed oil and plant based iron food suppliments. My youngest son is lacto-ovo intolerant and as we all eat together anything that is normally made with milk, cheese or eggs is made with a soya substitute. Most (about 90%) of the food we eat is also organic and as much as possible locally sourced to cut down on carbon miles. All the grains we buy are unrefined wholegrains apart from risotto rice. One of my favourite veggie cookbooks comes from the Edinburgh based whole foods/veggie restaurant (established in the 60's) called Henderson's. The reataurant and shop are still there on Hanover Street for anyone who is visiting Edinburgh!
Here's a link to the article. It's got me thinking as I tend to consume a fair amount of soya milk and yes, even tofu. What it says is that evidence for the claimed health benefits of soya is inconclusive and it may be harmful to certain age groups. Part of the problem is that modern processes in the food industry don't follow traditional Asian techniques that fermented the beans thus reducing the hormone content. SO tempeh could still be OK, soya milk or industrially extracted soy protein, maybe less so. Fact is, most beans and legumes are somewhat toxic in their natural state and need proper preparation before eating. EDIT: Just found a response to the original Guardian article by Dr Justine Butler, a vegetarian campaigner, citing numerous studies that have found no health risk to humans and pointing out that cows' milk can also contain high levels of hormones. Oh dear, why can't things be simple?
I know Trendy Hendie's but somehow hardly ever went there while I lived in Edinburgh - my favourite veggie places were Seeds Cafe (now Suzy's Diner) and Kalpna.
Good to know but where are they? I left the UK in 78 for several years and although I come from nr Edinburgh originally I have been back only on rare occasions. Hendersons is an old familiar haunt. Although I am there perhaps twice a year, I would love to know where these other places are. Any suggestions for good veggie eateries in Glasgow?
I adore meat and actually have a bit of a chicken addiction. But I do tend to buy from a local reputable butcher. I can't bring myself to buy processed supermarket meats, that's not at all appetising. But a butcher's shop window looks marvellous to me I'm afraid!
Kalpna serves an all-you-can-eat Indian veggie buffet, it's on Nicolson St near George Square. To the best of my knowledge it's hardly changed since my first visit to the city in 1985. Suzy's is a cheap-and-cheerful counter-service kind of place in one of the side-streets nearby, I never was very good at street names. Don't know Glasgow so well but there used to be a nice veggie cafe called the Bay Tree (checks Google) in fact they're still there, 403 Great Western Rd. Happy eating.
Thanks Roffa....Great Western Road in the route I go in and out of Glasgow! Can probably get the coach from a stop near ther - always useful!
