I'd really like just a band of some kind...or something with my birthstone and my partner's birthstone...thought that might be cool too.

Mine has a princess cut center with two small diamonds on either side and then 12 smaller diamonds around the band. My center stone has perfect clarity and is colorless and my side stones have perfect clarity and are near colorless. The clarity is the most important thing imo.
My wedding ring is a half eternity band with 13 smaller diamonds half-way around. I wear my wedding ring now even though we're not married...because well I want to.
I like really contemporary and modern jewlry.
My big piece of advice is to get a ring that has the front and back sides stylized, because you are the one who lookes at the sides. The side of my wedding ring has a filigree pattern and my engagement ring has a curvey pattern around the center stone. It's pretty bad ass.
