Sentient is capable of feeling or perception. A single cell organism will recoil from unpleasant stimulus, even though there is no apparent nervous system.
We are also born without language and culture, and those are institutions just like religion is. You are speculating about how someone should live, and thats exactly what you (and i) hate about most religious peoples beliefs. I guess you are right though, in the sense that parents are imposing their beliefs, and adherence to them on a mind that wouldn't know any better. After all, we are taught a lot of what we know, and we are taught most of the stuff we know about other things. But if someone chooses to believe in god or pray to the sun or whatever, i'm fine with it as long as they understand what they are doing and don't impose. A picture for color. so primitive....
I wasn't aware the picture had anything to do with what we were talking about. I actually liked the picture.... so confused
I don't know why you thought my sig quote had anything to do with the original topic anyway, but thanks for commenting. (I was fixin' to change my sig pic anyway) ZW
Oh i didn't i just felt like commenting. Because um, since everyone starts atheist and all.... (back on topic )
Well, I barely remember starting out Atheist. Fuckin' parental units foisted the Bible shit on me before I even started kindergarden...I started asking the hard questions about 3rd grade when I'd had enough of the fire and brimstone BS...Their shunted half-replies did'nt do much for my respect for authority, I'll tell you that... It's affected my entire life to this day and led ultimately to my auto-didactic nature. ZW
Life is fundamentally dedicated to it's own existence. This dedication, while dimly articulated and lacking a homo centric type of appreciation is non the less real. You may refer to them as dedicated instincts if you will.
Makes no sense, "everyone STARTS atheist". Did they receive the assertion of God BEFORE they started? And they STARTED with the ability to rationalize and reject this assertion? Everyone Starts as a collection of instructions and traits but mostly as a blank slate or naive sponge willing to accept anything as it starts its long journey to self awareness and maturity.
