This is Toledo Spain, where I lived nearby in Torremolinos for two years as a child. It is ancient navel architecture that is basically unchanged to this day around the world, no matter what kind of port. The Athenians used this style, because it meant their ships could supply the shore and protect each other. Ports are usually located in sheltered harbors where the weather doesn't make the ships heave up and down all the time, so they are easier to load and unload. The larger fortification at the top is where today the fire department is located so they can fly downhill faster, and where the magazine and ammo is stored along with the really enormous cannons. The locals are a lovely people, who eat sunflower seeds, shells and all, nonstop and never met an egg they didn't like, but are pickier about their sangria and love to sit on their porches until midnight chatting with neighbors passing by. Siesta time can be four hours long, and they come back for another four hours of work after the worst of the heat of the day is over.
I found the hikes to be challenging and fun. Just right. I don't recall ever being on a trail i considered extremely difficult. But i'm in really good shape and love the heat so that's not saying much. I can see how it would be rated that way. The hikes are pretty steep with loose rocks. Factor in the heat and you have an extremely difficult hike. October temps rage between low to upper 90s. And the locals consider that pleasant. In the summer when the temps get to about 115 or 118, yeah i can see that being much more challenging for me. The photos above were actually from a few different hiking trails from Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Camelback Mountain, and South Mountain.
