I like all of the three: Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. Don't think they can be compared, they are great in their own ways. But I think I like the Simpsons best because they where the first and some kind of revolutionary
Family Guy is terrible, it has dumb down TV so much. Even in terms of being offensive it fails miserably, Bitch magazine did a bunch of articles comparing Family Guy to South Park in terms of how offensive they are and gave South Park credit for the fact despite being more offensive it had a complex and creative script and that in the end would try to make an argument in favor of privilege, Family Guy just offends on the lowest common denominator. It's like in 5th grade when someone made a fart joke. Yea it was funny the first few times, and when I was 12. I'm gonna quote the Bitch article http://bitchmagazine.org/post/televism-the-offensive-olympics-closing-ceremonies For those not interested I bolded the important parts on why two shows that are incredibly offensive, one is actually good and hilarious while one is a pile of heaping shit. God I can't believe they canceled King of the Hill for the Cleavland show. Seth McFarlane is the reason we can't have nice things. We will never have plot lines, innuendo, sarcasm or character development ever again.
@ MadcapSyd This may be a little off topic, but good god, that Bitch Magazine article blew my mind. While I respect the thought the writer put into it, geez, that's more PC oversensitivity than I've ever had to absorb in my life. The writer makes a lot of good arguments...but only from her slanted point of view. She specifically makes a reference to an episode where a trans-woman (Mr./Mrs Garrison) is called "a man with a mutilated penis". And she says that's offensive. Although she ignores the end of the episode, when Garrison realizes that he's comfortable with his sex change. Never mind that Garrison himself says he's "a man with a mutilated penis" during a frantic identity crisis stemming from nervousness about his sex change. Argh. I didn't mean to get this off-topic. Sorry It's just some of these PC folks really go hard on satire. I can understand the criticism of Family Guy because, really, a lot of McFarlane's shit isn't satire at all, just lazy fart jokes (as the writer put it). But she's so damn wrong about South Park.
True but if you read all 4 articles(the last one was a summary, one was on Family Guy, one was on South Park and one an introduction) she says the fact she's a big fan of one of the shows, it was just little homegrown experiment to see which show was truly the most offensive. Guess which show she does like?(hint, it's the correct one to like) I'm a huge fan of South Park too, hell I've been watching it since like 6th grade.(holy fuck South Park is old), but, South Park in general is pretty offensive to just about everyone and every group of people imaginable, that's why we all watch it. It does argue for privilege at the end of most of its morals though. Like that trans episode, sure Mr. Garrison did come to accept his/her new self, but the moral from the kids was people just need to learn to accept their natural bodies. BUT! As she said, South Park makes well thought out political, social, and religious commentary in its stories with well written scripts. If it was Family Guy there'd just be a tranny followed by 45seconds of barfing. She makes a good point in her South Park article, South Park is so good it can actually be offensive without being offensive: Back on topic though, South Park is like a finely bolt action rifle from the 1890's, beautiful, brilliant and deadly. Family Guy is like a plastic wal-mart toy gun, designed for idiots yet someone is still going to shoot an eye out. To be fair though the first 2-3 seasons of Family Guy were pretty good. Also I really like the fact whenever Family Guy comes up in topic I now have a large article I can quote that makes very effective points on how South Park, despite being god knows how much more offensive than Family Guy is a brilliant show that is still enjoyed by all. Meanwhile Family Guy just spews shit.(no literally, Brian spewing shit is 9min of the next episode coming out)
I'm really disappointed in the direction Family Guy has went. When it first came about 10 years ago the random jokes of the show actually made sense and it was more slap-stick oriented. The characters were better too. I campaigned to get Family guy back on the air after the three year hiatus for Fox taking it down. Family guy has really shitty character styles now. For example: Stewie isn't an evil genius anymore, he's now a sexually confused baby. I believe it has mostly to do with a new writing staff. AND most especially, 3 total Seth McFarlaine shows. All the characters in all three shows are the same!! It's a fucking crime! They changed Cleveland Jr. from a hyperactive ADHD child into a carbon-copy of Chris Griffin. All shows are about a family with: 1. An oafish husband with bizarre antics and moronisms (Peter Griffin, Stan, Cleveland) 2. An under appreciated yet attractive wife 3. A rebellious teenage daughter who hates her family. 4. A geeky/loser socially inept teenage son 5. A non human best friend (Dog, Alien, Bear) 6. A pint sized wise-talker for comic relief (Stewie, the Fish, and that one kid that looks exactly like Stewie in the Cleveland show. I don't watch the other shows. It's all the same recycled crap over and over again. Maybe, just maybe, Family Guy would be a much better show once again if they canned the other two shows and brought all the funny ideas into one show instead of filtering them all off into three different programs.
The video Seth McFarlane doesn't want you to see: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1924513 HAHAHAHAHAHA
I dont know if its because i'm over it or if the latest couple of seasons arent as funny but they arent
I hate when McFarlane tries injecting political humor into Family Guy. There's rarely any thought put into it. Basically he goes: "Here's another cutaway gag equating Fox News to Nazis! Also: Texans are stuuuupid!" It's so fucking lazy. And yo, the Simpons have been awful for the last 10 years or so.
I don't really find the show funny anymore. I found it funny back when I was 13/14. But as I've grown older I've found Futurama and King Of The Hill to be more funny and entertaining. It seems to me that more recent Family Guy has just become more random violence for the sake of being violent (like that episode with Peter mutilating a cat that Quagmire got), and unlike South Park, there is nothing really funny about it so I just can't think too highly of it. Of course South Park goes way over the top, but at least it can be funny. And the cutaways, just not funny at all anymore.
Family guy has its moments like every show does. The first few seasons of it was fucking hilarious. Same with south park, that show sometimes is just too good. Simpsons will always be a classic. Family guy has lost a lot of its humor though. Its hard to always come up with new material. They are all good, I don't like to say one is better than the other since i have laughed my ass off to all three of them.
Have you ever noticed that Brian the dog has become nothing more than an opinionated mouthpiece for McFarlane?
