I liked his performance but hated that movie because I didn't understand why he needed to die, when they knew the truth. Just made no sense.

I disagree 100% The guards were subject to a faulty system, which has a strong base in reality. Its an excellent reminder of it. Superb movie imho

 

The people that ran the system, or had some type of influence to affect it, new the truth, and could have prevented the execution.

 

Indeed, an important lesson and reminder. Thus a great movie.

 

It probably had to go that way to support the overall plot of the movie I guess. Then the ending would have been different, and not as intriguing.
