Dharma Bums is better than On the Road, but it's still not his best book.

I read 1984 when I was 12 and was somewhat amused.

    Huxley is lame.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is probably my favorite...but it's been the answer I've given to this question since I was 17, because I can't think of any better answer, lol. I mostly just read far below my reading level these days, because I don't read for school anymore, I read for pleasure, lol.

I haven't read many novels but American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis is my favorite so far. The mundane, amature attempt at the film was a complete failure in comparision.

Why wow? lol, Is that supposed to be an insult directed at my taste? Because I don't really get into the movie elitist thing. If I like something, I like it.

    Good morning,

well, I've read Benn's biographie and some of his texts. Some are interesting, but I think he wrote a lot of them to torture 'Germanisten' past his life ;).

Wilhelm Meister and such are a little bit boring, indeed. I prefer Goethe's 'travel literature', like 'Italienische Reise' or the correspondence with Herder. I like his descriptions of landscapes, things and people. Well, his scientific observations are mostly crap, but they are fun to read. In general I like travel literature. Check out Rory MacLean and esp. his book about the Hippie Trail.

I've added the book to my list. I'll come back if it doesn't fulfil my expectations ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

I loved the first two, haven't read the third. You have good taste.
The latter two on your list are both very good reads.

Agreed. In fact, I seem to be one of the few people in the hipworld who thinks it's shite.

Awesome book. I read it last year and loved it.

One that I will add is Steppenwolf. It has been my favourite book for years.

Some of you should also check out "The Book Thief". I gave it a write up in the Recommend a Book thread stickied in the Books forum.

My favorite book is Brecht's Collected Stories.

He was neither an idealist nor a pessimist. And I think literature suffers from both extremes because of the mode of production within the publishing industry. That is the reason he is a genuinely different writer.
    --------------------------

    Current reading list includes:

Brecht, Caucasian Chalk Circle - materialist play dramatizing the parable that "the proof of the pudding is in the eating" (and not in lofty ideas)
The Blue Cliff Record - collection of Zen parables
Beckett, Happy Days - existential play
Camus, A Happy Death - existential novel
Epitectus, Echiridion - Stoic philosopher's "manual of living"
Frost, The Poetry Of - my favorite poet.

No way! I couldn't even get past the first couple of chapters. I LOVE VC Andrews, but that shit was WAY too fucked up for my head. My favorite series is the Logan family series. Daniel calls my VC Andrews books my smut collection. Haha.

    My heart. :(

Na, it is a good book! :D It's pretty much fucked up the whole way through, but it's awesome. It seems really real.

Oooh Heaven? Loved that series. Made me cry a few times.

    Smut collection.
