I think this bodes well for Obama.

I hope to hear more of these accusations.

Socialism, by the way, is not defined as "redistribution of wealth", as in when the poor have to pay payroll tax on 100% of income and the rich do not.

Anyone care to define socialism? (hint - it's happening to the banking industry right now)

it won't matter either way, because both mccain and obnama want to hand america over to the latin americans. they both support umbrella amnesty and continuing the failure called the war on terrorism. they are also both deeply in the pockets of the israel lobby. so, i don't see much difference between the two.

Capitalsim in the US form isn't working very well today either. The only thing that will ever work is pay or work or goods, none of the markets today are based on that.

Acorn only registers voters, republican take people off the roles and keep their votes from mattering. It's called vote caging. And the republicans have mastered the technique, and if proscecuted it's illegal, but so far they have managed to remain above the law.

In the interests of keeping this thread a little shorter, i'll answer that:

Socialism is an economic system in which all means of production and distribution are wholly owned, and controlled, by the state. The government makes all the crucial decisions such as what goods and services are to be produced, how they are to be produced, in what quantities they are to be produced and at what prices they are to be sold.

    Dictionary: socialism

    ('shə-lĭz'əm) [IMG]
    1. Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
    2. The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.

Aristartle gets the prize for taking a minute to look something up!

By her definition, welfare is not socialism. And socialism is not welfare. State ownership of banks? Well, you decide. Look at the definition Ari gracefully posted, and decide.

Elijah, do you know who Barry Goldwater is? He's the guy who came up with the strategy of conflating the social safety net with socialism. You need to know who you are aping when you ape. And you should have some arguments ready to convince others that welfare equals socialism, because otherwise the people who agree with you will become a smaller and wackier subset of the human race. If you want to spout off about it without sounding like a demagogue, learn some history.

It was wrong in the 60's, and it's wrong now. The social safety net is what keeps capitalism alive.
