Yeah, I don't like the idea of working on an outdated computer/system but I dislike the idea of buying the whole set again every 2 or 3 years even more. My outdated flip phone doesn't feel outdated at all as the things I used it for still work fine today. It's more the general consensus that has labeled it outdated.

I agree with you about buying high quality products that last over the long term. Unfortunately, it seems like this is difficult to do with a lot of technology. I can't help but suspect that some of the big names in technology (and other industries, I'm sure) engage in planned obsolescence.

first cell phone i ever had was some motorolla model, tri-band with about a 5 line monochrome LCD with green backlight. it could get on the internet iirc, but it was hard to use because of the display.

and no, it wasn't a flip phone, it was one of the candybar shaped ones. extendable antenna but i think that was mostly cosmetic.

Except for not needing a cord anymore, voice phones haven't changed significantly since they were first invented, because they haven't needed to change much. The antique models that you see in old movies enabled you to talk to somebody who was miles away, and sometimes that's all you need.

I live in former Alltel territory, so Verizon inherited all their old shit. Alltel used to be a lot better than Verizon, back when we had a choice between them.

I can assure you that any company that is not doing this is in a situation where it isn't an option for them, for one reason or another.

Ever see a bag phone? I had one of those. They took a phone designed to install under the dash of a car and put it in a bag with a battery. Expensive and short range, but better than nothing in an emergency.

i don't think i'm old enough for that but my grandparents had one of those car phones, with like a 6 inch antenna. looked like a regular corded telephone handset except for the antenna.

that's how i ended up with verizon too. i've never had a significant problem with either one, except one time back in the alltel days when my phone broke and they wouldn't let me get a new one because i was on a family plan and my name wasn't the primary name on the account.

Grandparents? Oh my god! [IMG] I think you had unusually progressive grandparents! Car phones weren't that long ago.

The earliest ones needed magnetic rooftop antennas that were about two feet long, because the towers were so far apart.

    i wouldn't call them progress

maybe it was a bigger antenna than that. i wouln't say they were progressive either. i remember they did have a rotary telephone, they probably still have it too.

car phones were probably 20-25 years ago. so if his grandparents are around 70 now, that would put them at a pretty appropriate age for such a purchase at the time.

so basically 55 and 65ish at the time of car phones. i think 55 is still usually a pretty open age to new inventions, and 65 is not particularly surprising either.
