Of course it is. But what's fucked up worse is just how many people (some we see routinely here) who will rail and assail the character of anyone who dares attempt to get them to open their eyes and realise how misinformed the general public truly is on both domestic and, more so, international affairs and what is really going on or at stake. Sadly, what makes it so easy to misinform the public by all the mainstream players (radio, television and press) is the simple fact that only approx 10% of Americans even have passports and thus have any real comprehension of what is going on in the rest of the world other than what the corporate media wishes to tell them between commercials. One reason why i strongly advocate mandatory foreign study for all American Highschoolers for at least a 1 year (and better 2 year) period so that we might have a generation capable of seeing just how little they have been told about what Washington is really up to in our name around the world.
That is a very good point, and when you think about it, it is like this...The rich people and the High Middle Class are the only ones who can afford to travel abroad, and those people are far less likely to complain about the government because they have it good. The poor on the other hand, are too poor to travel abroad, so they don't find anything out about what is happening around the world, and they are the ones who are more likely to complain about the government because they are constantly getting screwed in the ass by them. Peace and Love, Dan
Actually Angel, it is the affluent and comfortable middle class (though the latter is steadily shrinking) which comprise the majority of those who have the breadth of insight into whats actually going outside our shores and thus have remained the key players in any effort to expose fraud, corruption and lies in Washington, the poor usually end up blindly supporting the corporate elites who are screwing them over and the politicians who make it ever easier to do so by systematically removing necessary regulations. If federally funded programs ensured that all kids of all economic levels could become better versed in the countries and cultures of which they only hear about on Fox News, CNN, et al., we might actually achieve a state of truly informed consent or dissent in America.
There is no mandatory foreign study in most other countries, yet they are in general uniformly capable of producing a much better informed populace on issues of foreign affairs than we see in the US...I also can't ever see mandatory foreign study being a practical option. Perhaps a better education system and a media free from parochialism and big business bias is what is required in the US in order to rid that nation of its blinkers? Although hoping for those two things is probably just as unrealistic as advocating mandatory foreign study ...
The populace of other nations is far more travelled and generally comprehending of their multitude of neighbouring nations (if not indeed further afield) and that at even low income levels than is our American population. The right wing touts how much "better off we are" than the rest of the world and yet the vast majority of our "better off" citizens content themselves in staying put smugly inside the US whilst regurgitating pontifications and condemnations against the remaineder of the planet of which they have no firsthand knowledge whatsoever. It's truly pathetic and part of what makes us a mockery in the eyes of the international community. I concur that measures must be taken to break the FCC fraud that has placed our supposedly free press at the slavish servitude of elite corporate agendas over true, contextualised information, but nothing will open the eyes of the populace faster than time spent learning about the world and the cultures which we must share it with than a protracted period of foreign placement (and not the military variety).
It's as if there's an international news blackout now in the U.S. tv news media. Only events like Iraq that have an immediate effect on the U.S. appear on TV (along with the eternal soap operas like the Peterson case). I pick up news channels from other countries on dish and they cover international events far better than anything in the U.S. They discuss the culture and issues of countries, whereas the U.S. media simply spews a lot of opinion and ideological rant without ever giving enough information about the issue to understand it and think about it critically. (Jeb Bush thought that Spain was a republic in one of his speeches). To look at an issue critically and make a decision based on practical reason instead of an irrational ideology is considered by some to be un-American. For some, it doesn't matter if it makes practical sense. If it goes against an ideology, it's wrong.
During the reagan years and after, the far right decided they didn't like the fact that most reporters tended to be a bit left leaning. (perhaps they're that way because they spend their lives delving into the matters of the world and see that the forces of the wealthy tend to have too much pull so they try to balance things a bit) Anyway, the right wing decided to convince the nation that the media was far too left wing, and unfair. And for the most part they have succeeded. So, Rupert over at FOX sees a great opportunity for some big $$$$$. In the balance between left and right, where is the middle? Where is fair and balanced? Most intelligent people know full well FOX is tilted far right. It's like the GEORGE BUSH show (formally anti-Clinton show) on the morning FOX and friends. But since, many American are now convince the real center is the far left, then the far right must be the center. Hell, If CNN, NBC and ABC were far left, why'd the let Reagan and Ollie North and the gang off so easy in Iran-Contra, and same goes for this bullshit war for oil. Most Americans are never expossed to any real far left media. There are NO, radio shows or newspapers in my area that express leftist views, so no wonder the right wing found it so easy to say the center IS the far left!
The supposed "liberal" media had a field day gorging itself on any shred of recrimination, however slight, during the better part of the Clinton years. The simple fact is, the criminals who escaped prosecution for ACTUAL treachery against our nation during the Reagan/Bush Sr. era will call anything or anyone who dares try to hold them accountable now "far left". Its all part of the charade which claims moral authority to hold other nations accountable. The international community isnt fooled.
The real problem with our mainstream media (the source for most Americans info) is not that it is LEFT or RIGHT biased, but that it is under too much preassure from it's owners to get the highest ratings possible. Fox is only giving a large segment of the population what they think they want. CNN will be covering something of deep profound world wide importance, only to interupt it for the latest on the Lacy Peterson murder trial. Wouldn't it be great if CNN (or someone) decided to be a real in depth news station instead of a catch all magazine. Instead of the latest on Britney Spears pending marraige, a little more time spent on Haliburton. Last year I saw a very small artical in my local paper about a region in africa, where the women attempted to take over and seige a oil refinery, to demand better pay for their husbands and sons, and better schools. I never saw anything more about it. An event that has telling implications of why we are having problems in the would. And yet, I can't seem to avoid hearing about Koby Bryant.
