for anyone reading this forum there are a few warmongers and people sent to this site to shout down down dissent, they are like the web monitors in china, they have come here to howl down free speech and thought. the best thing you can do now is to give them less attention and warn others.
If the weathy have the power to corrupt those in government then there are problems with the government not the wealthy. Checks and balances need to be in place to keep money from influencing government. I don't believe free markets are the problem unless monopolies or collusion is happening. The problem is undue influence on and by elected leaders to protect the markets and people being served.
I pretty much agree Indydude. Except election campaigns cost $$$. And unless you're going to beg for scraps from millions of people the easiest way to get money is by pleaing to special interest. So in reality making effective checks and balances is extremely tough. In my mind one of the only true checks and balances is near complete transparency. Especially in finances, and open for public scrutiny. Porkbarrel spending, lavish dinners, all that would be on the spotlight. Thats what we need.
That isn't our responsibility. They shall see their errors in due time. All you can do is speak, and hope that they listen.
actualy i can agree with balbus to a point! first of all there is no sutch thing as a "free" market! generations of families that stemed from the robber barrons, railroad men and industrialists! have made certain of that! if anyone thinks government should stay out of buissness you have got to be out of your minds!!!!! no regulation?? haha! we would not have a forest left, anyone remember love canal? so lets say i want to grow and sell corn to a miller and undercut the big corn growers all they have to do is undercut me or buy my corn or refuse to sell theirs to the miller if he buys mine, puts the miller out of buissness puts me out of buissness! check and mate becaus they can afford to! now on the personal side witch i find that all threads balbus gets involved in becomes, i think he/you try to be an intelectual bully but lack the tools to do so! peace!
i can agree that balbus can be a pompus ass but if we all agreed there would be nothing to talk about!
hehe when i said him/you i was trying to let him know i was speaking directly to him also! did you catch the part were i said lacks the tools to do so?
actually i beleive it is kinda like teaching a child not to steal, you dont always have to call his mother! maybe i should have said show! them
So, I'm confused (thanks Balbus). Would there BE such a thing as a "free market" if we were not subject to "globalization"? Can there be one without the other?
Hipstatic I’ve done many different things, I grew up and helped out in the family run pub and then the shop, been a migrant worker, been an illegal worker, owned my own business, been a sub-contractor, been a full time student, worked in education, I’ve been unemployed in countries where I couldn’t claim benefits and been unemployed in ones where I could. I’ve worked in the public, private and voluntary sector. I’ve worked in jobs that earned me much more than comfortable wages and ones that were little more that food and board. Each one has given me differing experiences and taught me differing lessons. How about you? Last time we talked on this I believe you said you were a city trader is that still right? *
earthmother Quote: You don’t like it when I highlight that your stance and views seem to be right wing. You may think it bull shit, but just calling it BS doesn’t actually make it BS, I set out and explained, why I believe your views are right wing, you haven’t addressed those assertions and just saying they’re ‘wrong’, ‘untrue’, ‘BS’ doesn’t refute them. You claim that I’m wrong – I ask you to back it up – you seem unwilling or unable to so so. * Quote: Is that why you get huffy when I ask you things you’re unwilling to answer, you don’t like your ideas being challenged? I’m the opposite. Five different responses of – its wrong, its untrue, it’s false, its crap or I’m not going to reply. Doesn’t actually address what’s been said. *
* Guy But Guy I like playing with them LOL But seriously - I do try to warn people, but I also think they need to be confronted, because in a lot places they’re not. *
Indydude It takes two to tango Wealth should not be trying to corrupt government and government should not allow itself to be corrupted. There should be checks and balances, laws and regulations covering all sides. This is one reason why I think the whole think tank, lobbying, media system needs to be reformed. *
Flmkpr Agreed. LOL – thing is I don’t claim to be an intellectual, the other thing I’ve pointed out is that in the UK politics is a lot more confrontational and I’ve have a lot more heated arguments with friends down the pub than I’ve ever had here, and then we buy a round and talk about movies. But the thing is that they’re much more open and honest when they debate so we are discussing the actual issues, not just saying the other persons speaking bull shit, without ever putting up a rational argument as to why is supposed to be BS. That’s the thing that I find hard to understand with some posters here – they have come voluntarily to a place to debate politics and then they wilfully refuse to debate politics and get affronted when they’re asked to.
Mad But that is my question, do moves toward a ‘free market’ lead to a free and better society for everyone? And it is a question you don’t seem able to answer.
