Up to a point, but it's a dangerous route to go down thinking like that. We already do let them tell us that though. People like to bitch about "PC gone mad", but do we really want the alternative?
I agree 100%. Look at Bush. I don't like him, and that's putting it mildly. In fact, that's the point. I put it mildly. You see, I believe more people have been driven from the anti-Bush crowd because of their childish behavior (this site being largely one giant case-in-point. Dissent, but dissent maturely, or not at all.
gardener you are seriously in no condition to lecture on the state of the world nor what is appropriate levels of poliutical force - according to your profile you were in your 20's during the 1960's so lets pretend you actually cared back then about the world and adopted an oppositional stance to capitalism. Sorry but your revolution failed - now we have a revolution going on in Europe and the aim is to infect the USA with the same anticapitalist fervour - sorry but I really do hate you smug self satisfied do - gooders that have only one qualification - age ! perhaps if your generation had believed enough and really wanted it enough we would by now have had the revolution and have rebuilt along better lines - but no - you were bullshitted that revolution leads to chaos - not borne out by the experiences of France was it ? No our generation wants it enough to try for it - if we fail at least we tried - where the fuck were you bullshit hippies when you had the chance - smacked up on herion strung out on too many fuckin drugs !!! Ah bambi - happy capitalism frolicking in the glade Gentle pretty thing only had one spring You bravely faced the world Ready for anything I'm happy that you lived And your life is mine What have I except to cry Spirit never die Birds of the air Beasts of the earth Overjoyed at Bambi's birth they gambolled in the glade Who killed Bambi? ....... Who killed Bambi? ...... Murder murder murder Someone should be angry The crime of the century Who shot little Bambi Never trust a hippy or a fucking bum you'll never find the killer in a rock and roll movie how are ya sparky parki Lena Zavarone With one big shout They all cry out Who killed Bambi?...... Who killed Bambi? ..... Meaning : real revolution is on the streets - not in a cinema - dont let anyone sell you the revolution - take everything the world has - for free - !!! take it from the powerful and use it properly
Capitalism allows you to do this already. If you are concerned about obtaining power for yourself, get a degree in business and start your own business, or claw your way to the top of some other business. If you are such a responsible and moral person who knows what direction humanity needs to step, you deserve to be in power, so let's see you acquire it in the current system rather than fantasize about destroying what we have and starting from scratch. Oh and the problem with capitalism is not the system but the decisions made by people in power. Do you really think we will make better decisions in a state of perpetual anarchy? Can anarchy even exist for very long before one dominant force emerges as a power? And again, how will resources be organized in a way to continually develop our level of technology if everyone is free to acquire what they want. Advancing technology is a natural function of striving to fulfill our potential as a species and is ultimately essential to a Utopian Society. If we stay on earth in disorganized tribes, we are doomed to die. Also quoting a Sex Pistols song written by Malcolm McLaren (he did write the lyrics I'm assuming? Even if not, he was the one in creative control of the album it was released on), himself a manipulative bastard hated by the band , and recorded and released after the band broke up is not giving you much ammunition. McLaren was full of shit and was only after one thing, money. McLaren was not an anarchist, and that song and every track on that second album was a move to sell out to appeal to the mainstream acceptance of punk culture. It's a cool song but I don't consider it an honest artistic statement.
no american can lecture a bit on the meaning of the sex pistols ! Anybody know of David Irving? The man jailed for questioning how many jews died in the holocaust? Freedom of speech my ass. The west only uses that when they make attacks on muslims and do not grant thier own citizens that right.
um, if we eliminate anything that will offend anyone, then we all might as well live in silence and abolish sign language. everything will offend anyone. and "limited free speech" is a total oxymoron.
There is always personal responsibility or should be. You should always stop and think before you speak.
Lol "the west". Just to clarify, Irving was imprisoned in Austria (funnily enough, they're a little cagey about WWII there), and a lot of people in "the West", even hardened Jew-lovers, regard the laws concerning holocaust denial as hypocritical and detrimental to freedom. I believe members of the UK cabinet protested it at the time. No-one fought very hard for Irving's rights, because, you know, HE'S A DICK, but still, I'd prefer if you didn't paint a whole power bloc as being sympathetic to what was in reality a very controversial and far from unanimous decision. And I'm pretty sure we "use" free speech when we attack people other than Muslims. Certainly in this country, free speech is pretty much a given. There are situations where it is not the case, but they're usually "common sense" ones (like when someone uses a debate on one subject purely as an excuse to rant at someone about an unrelated issue because they happen to be in the same room).
Well yeah, I just started this thread to see how people would react to the idea. Some of the most vocal advocates of free speech tend to get the idea that: Nothing should be censored because it's offensive unless they find it offensive, because they are EXACTLY as liberal as someone can be before it starts to be WRONG. Either absolutely any medium, place and time is appropriate for exercising the right to freedom of speech, or else none are. That in the name of free speech, a person can expect to say what they like at the expense of other people's right to free speech; that is, they feel that if someone says "you are a jerk" after their diatribe on whatever subject, that person is violating their right to free speech. Hot clits.
Who gets to decide what is offensive and what is not? Our trusted government? You? Me? Popular opinion? Free speech equals freedom. Repressing free speech equals repression. I will take my chances with being offended. Peace, Love, Run Naked
^ true dat, couldnt have said it better. if you cant handle what people have to say you shouldnt be in america, go back to england or somethin where people are nicer. seriously if you dont agree with what another person says stand up for what you believe in and use your freedom of speech...what are you guys gonna try and do next? make us all christian! fuck that!
AGREED. You can only become offended, when you allow yourself to become offended. People can be cruel, selfish animals...that's how things have always been, and always will be, and NO LAW will ever change that. People need to change and love on their own.... because they've learned something... not because some white collar asshole forces a law upon them. TO THE OP: If you believe in freedom at all, I'd suggest you re-evaluate your idea, here...
