I don't think I could play Skyrim better with a mouse and keyboard It works really well with a 360 controller!
The only thing that I've noticed that would probably be a lot easier with a keyboard is magic. It can be really annoying to switch between spells using the favourites list with a controller.
Yeah, it's worthwile to have a nice selection of magic skills ready. I still generally used the favourites list for it. But I often also didn't had a problem with going in the menu to select some other spells. I guess because I generally used a lot of the same magic stuff Both of the two times I got pretty far into the game my character leaned more to close combat style. One time more on onehanded with shield and the other more foccused on twohanded weapons. You can still become pretty good in magic when you're choose to be a warrior.
Well I'm old. I don't think I could make my thumbs work correctly if I had to try the "circle strafe" type maneuvers with a controller, a joystick with twist, no problem, but new fangled controllers with 12 buttons, two joysticks, and a d-pad is just too much for us old geezers. :wheelchair:
I understand but I bet it is just a manner of getting used to it. I haven't played a game with mouse & keyboard in years and am also not looking forward to it because I am terribly used to my controller now. I did play games with mouse & keyboard before though and so I know I am capable of using it just as good as the controller... but not at first. So if I am not planning on getting used to it again there is no point at all for me to try and get into it just for once. I can imagine for you it is the same with the controller You don't know the button functions and then you have not one but 2 analog sticks and never mind those 4 triggers But really, when you get used to it you don't want to go back. It's much more compact than a keyboard too.
For my main character, the one I've been playing again lately, I generally do a bit of archery but mostly focus on close combat. He double wields enchanted daedric swords and wears a full set of daedric armour. Pretty awesome combination.
I think there are some buttons on the console too that are used like that. Probably the d-pad? Don't recall exactly since I haven't started this game up for awhile. I do know I had a favourite item list that contained pretty much every item I often used. Worked well :2thumbsup:
I never got real special armor myself, other than the stuff you get in quests. I also liked roaming the land in animal hides naturally (not practical when under attack but hey, that's where the use of your favourites list comes in handy)
I concentrated on stealth, archery, enchantment & light armor. All are maxed. She is just shy of level 46 and I think I have gotten into maybe 3 melee fights. I usually kill them before they ever even know I'm around. I have enchanted all my crap with double enchantments, with four items that give a +40% to bow damage each (yes, they stack), there aren't many things that can survive a sneak bow attack.:reddevil: I can often peel off 75% of most dragons hit points with one sneak attack.
I thought those living dragons are hard to sneak upon (since they come from above usually )? I know those sneaky practices can come in handy, yeah. I never foccused on either archery or sneaking myself haha Most attacks from a distance were done with either a magic staff (use also enhanced by enchanted stuff), some destruction spells (fire, frost or shock depending on the enemy) and a shout or 2. It's fun to hear the preferences of someone else. They can be so different in how you will generally use your character in quests! I never can play a whole skyrim game as a thief or magician though so I guess that's why I never choose to spend a lot of skill points in those directions. Might try some real different character development next time (could be I end up swinging axes again though)
Bah just spent way too much time playing when I should be studying. I'm trying to get my enchantment up to 100 so that I can double enchant my armour
Well, I hope you enjoy your time you play too much Would be awful to imagine you would just gathering skill points to up your rankings (reminds me of a friend who played WoW) I did not get any skill to 100 I think. It felt like a drag to reach for me personally.
My enchanting is pretty close now, and my smithing is 100. I think one-handed is getting up there, but I haven't really paid attention. Smithing and enchanting got so high because I would collect a bunch of ore and then just kill an hour smithing and enchanting things to sell every once in a while. Sometimes I'm in the right mood and it's actually pretty fun.
Yeah, I recall I was eager to get smithing on a high rank so I could later on craft the best armor. I tried it for awhile (stash the loot then later when you build up a nice collection of ore and stuff go to the forge) but there were just too many other things that were more diverse and fun then to go blacksmithing each time. Also, I didn't find I really needed such high skills or all the best armor to go through most parts of the game, so i guess that was the main reason I didn't bother with it in the end. If i got there automatically it would be great but hey, I already finished the main storyline at level 26 or something so it would take me forever or so it seems
I noticed today that my difficulty was only set to expert, so I might move it to master or legendary to make things a bit more challenging. Seems I can kill anyone now without much trouble.
I remember the joy when I first discovered i could beat a giant in close combat. Granted, the first hit was from behind (noxiousgas' tactic ). I never got to the point I could attack giants without any risk at all though. Some of the dragons were more easy. I love the challenge and suspense early on in the game (especially first time through of course) when encountering a random dragon or frosttroll!
I haven't tried a giant in close combat yet... I'm going to try that later tonight when I take a study break haha
I have now come across two dragons that I caught taking a nap on top of their "alters". This unlucky chap was the most recent. I got there by scaling the side of the mountain, I rarely use roads or paths. LOL (I love the big furrow he dug in the ground when he crashed.) Most often though I can get a good sneak attack on them when they are engaged fighting something else. But when I'm going head to head with one, it usually takes me about 4 good hits to finish it off. The only time I have gotten killed by a dragon is when the sucker just balls out grabs me in his mouth and thrashes me around. I actually survived that once by virtue of good timing on slugging down potions, he spit me out, I killed him, heard a noise, turned around only to be met with the pummeling fists of a frost troll. Fucker killed me. When I am rushed and faced with a melee combat, I just shout at the sucker, the one that throws things around, and then pin-cushion his ass while he tries to stand up.
LOL, my first fight with a giant looked like something out of a cartoon. I'm hauling ass trying to run from this guy and he is closing fast. Soon I see his shadow looming over me and then see the end of his club come crashing down just an inch behind me. The "shock" caused my character to be bumped into the air and there I was, completely off the ground with my feet still running as fast as possible. Looked friggin' comical. I died by the way.
