WOW! This is a long thread! And i don't have time to read through it all. I'll just throw in something: I can't decide if Mercyful Fate is black or Progressive metal. Black due to it's themes of darkness and The Devil and progressive because there are classical and operatic influences with the occasional harpsichord thrown in.
by far doom metal (even though i put dio's holy diver in the best metal album thread). doom metal being the most varried and most intense, it is clearly the most interesting to me. my favorite bands are: Earth, Pentagram, Evoken, Skepticism, Disembowelment, st. vitus.......................
I saw Evoken live at Dutch Doom Day II two years ago (this year's been number four, with Mourning Beloveth headlining, but my budget didn't allow me to go ), but I got too pissed to remember if they were any good... (hey, I smoked cigarettes for the first time in my life that day... ) Listening to The march and the stream by Skepticism when it's still completely dark and you're walking outside on your own is sooo freaky! :O
What, no "stoner rock", or would that fall under the doom umbrella? And how to categorize the Neurosis/Todayistheday/Eyehategod sludgey-esque bands...meh to categories. My faves are the bands who defy 'em.
Man i dig the black and folk metal scenes.stuff like Moonspell and Candlemass and Helloween. The o course you gotta have thrash/speed metal like metallica.
