I've tried both (a bit) too :2thumbsup: I don't have to be the best/fastest to learn anyway. But I do wonder about what is perceived to be the best way to start with or do yoga in general anyway!

I used to do a bit of yoga until I did my knee in. They say generally to begin with the easier positions, and gradually increase the duration.
I have tried in the past to show a couple of other people some positions which I found easy, and they couldn't get anywhere near them.
My conclusion is that it's a lot easier for people with certain body types, mainly slim.

These days I'd rather have a few jars and a philosophical discussion. Hopefully one that doesn't end in a kick boxing match.

From my understanding, and I have been through this a little bit in actuality, there are three forms of yoga that all come under the general concept of Prajna yoga, which means Insight,Deep Understanding and Wisdom. It is a whole mind/body practise.Firstly Asana yoga is the physical stuff, the bending and stretching and moving stuff, which is to improve the energies in the body.Next is Hatha yoga which is mostly based around breathing exercises and correct posture for breathing,so as to get your heart and lungs in good shape. Finally is Raj yoga, which is the "King" of yogas, and this involves development of the meditational mind. This is achieved through activation of the third eye, which has been identified as being centred in the pineal gland which is a tiny endocrine gland located in the epithalamus, near the centre of the brain and set between the two hemispheres. It resembles a tiny pine cone.I have in the past personally practiced Raj yoga as it allowed me blissful experiences of unlimited expansion into holistic universal consciousness. However I am long out of practise, sadly, and got caught up instead with alcohol and substances.I am thinking of returning to some form of yogic practice but it never seems to be the right time.I will have to try and make that time.Slowly slowly catch a monkey.

I think you would like it given your personality and love of nature. There is a connected feeling when doing it.

Exactly. The more you do it the more your body opens.

That is the beauty of yoga is that there are many way to get there. It is a journey of self.

Loved reading your post and you do know it is a journey that never ends and starts as we need it to. :)

A teacher is really helpful in the case of physical limitations and even initial flexibility as all can be modified to be workable but they must be modified in balance. Doing poses brings balance so if you modify a pose you also have to modify the energy in a positive way.

That is not to say that you can not start without a yogi but if you plan to really do more in depth poses a few classes are a good idea. The most important part of learning is breath. Given that we do not breathe properly it takes time to train our minds to allow our lungs to breathe fully. The style of yoga you start with also can be really important. I always do beginners with Hatha. Intermediate Kundalini. The gap in between I also do Sahaja. I am able to teach all of these.

I took lessons when I started and then went on to get teaching accreditation. Sahaja I spent a year (82) in Surbiton at the ashram under Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.

Yoga is a personal journey and how ever you get there, it is all good. :)

The three main types of Yoga are:

Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana are the three primary yogas and date back to the 5th/2nd centuries, BCE. That is the yoga of action, devotion, and knowledge.

Hatha Yoga dates to the 11th century CE. It originally had few, if any asanas other than sitting still.

My feeling is that what is being talked about here is mainly Hatha Yoga.

    Physical postures etc.

No doubt we could have a long and deep philosophical discussion about Yoga. Maybe though it it would end in a kick boxing match. It would be nice to think not.

Sri Aurobindo, brilliant mind. The harmony of karma, jnana and bhakti. I have not had the pleasure of in depth study but the
connectivity of all appeals. It is harmonious and does honour ancient teachings.

Have you had any experience with it and if so I would love to hear about it. :)
