You don't like being told anything negative about it? Now you seem incredulous at the suggestion that you'd use wax, but don't forget, that seems to have been your previous plan, and most hairdressers WILL use wax when they backcomb. Don't discount twist n' rip as possibly a better, easier, less painful, more effective, faster, less damaging alternative to backcombing. While I understand a hairdresser charging 85 bucks to backcomb, cause it's going to be boring as fuck, you could easily do it with less of a loss of time on your own, they're just going to fall out anyways, that's unavoidable. I would suggest spending that money on entertainment (hence my comment about pot) and enlisting the help of a friend (or relative) to just do it-you'll save money and can go your own pace, do it your own way to your own liking. Nobody is critisizing you for wanting locks, it's your general instant gratification attitude on the whole thing. Not being patient and being able to make a slow thoughtful decision will not pan out well with locks, and so far you've already proposed two ways of "making" them. You saying that you don't like hearing anything negative is just counter-intuitive, how can you possibly expect to learn anything if you can't be corrected or take suggestions? Back-combing is not the greatest method, it won't "last" anyways, there's great alternatives, and it just feels lame if someone asks how you put tangles in your hair, and you start talking about a comb. It feels great to say that you wash it frequently and have done nothing else but wait, and watch their jaw hit the floor. Also, you should take heed of purp's warning that you will get a LOT of comments and questions, many implicitly or outright VERY negative, from being told to cut your hair (whitey) to being told (not asked) that you have filthy hair, are not fit to be seen, to go wash your hair/take a bath, that you're a bad influence on "the kids", to whatever. You will have "probable cause hair" and be automatically stopped and searched by law enforcement and put on the list for future harassment. Any establishment, business, government office, will be suspicious of you and treat you like crap/give you the runaround...... you'll get nasty and/or suspicious looks everywhere. You'll get some positivity, but really, very little. You'll meet a lot of people who are undecided, and it's up to you to help them decide right. You will find it very hard to get a "normal" job, generally you only have a good chance with friends or in a situation (like computer/automobile tech) where your skills are the main focus, and some eccentricity is acceptable if you do a better job than the rest. So.... better get used to adversity, everyone here is just trying to help you, if a whole dreadlock forum tells you to reconsider your way of thinking and proposed method of "getting" dreads, you should probably not push back but consider what we're saying, because we're about the most supportive/helpful people you'll find. The real world adversity will be trying to hurt you, we're just trying to help you and save you possible wasted YEARS of attempted locking time, you better learn how to take comments in stride and be nice in return, this is not EVEN training for walking down a southern US sidewalk as a cracka' with dreads.
^ this. we've all been through it before, and i understand you gatta learn from your mistakes, but trust us, learn from OURS. 3 and a half years down the line and i wish i hadnt backcombed two previous attempts at dreads using wax - its horrible srsly. if you wanna backcomb or twist n rip, enlist a friend or three. dont throw away your money!
Meh, $85-00 For A Back Comb Is Small Change.... Three Years Ago Before I Started Natural Locks I Well And Truly Did My Research Into The Different Methods To Get Them. The Lowest Quote I Got For Back Combing Was $599-00. The Highest Was $800-00.... Regardless Of This I Decided To Go Natural, The Cost Being $3-36 For Six Months Supply Of Bi-Carb Soda. The Savings I Made I Splurged On Wine.... Cheers Glen.
If you can't wait till you get them, how are you going to wait for them to mature? How are you going to endure all the changes they're going to go through?
