Saddam bought over $35 billion in weapons systems from the USSR, France, and China. He was one of the largest oil exporters in the world and his Arab neigbors gave him billions because they were so afraid of Iran. Saddam did not need to get "millions in loans" from the US to finance his wars.
Yes, we intervened to stop Iran from winning the war. I don't regret that.
Yes, we were also a minor supplier of arms to Iran, in order to free hostages. And if it was so good for US contractors, how come we got less than 1% of arms sales?
Nobody supplied WMD to Iraq. He developed his own.
I have. You have now proven that Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam, congratulations.
We never provided him with either. We supplied Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency, and they supplied resistance groups in Afghanistan.

Its amazing how you can pack in so many errors into one post. The problem is obviously that you stick to websites that will look into who armed Iran, find that the USSR, China, and France supplied $35 billion of weapon systems and the US sold a few tens of millions worth of civilian helicopters, and then conclude "The US armed Iraq!"

And don't send me some idiotic link showing that the US sent E Coli samples to the University of Baghdad, I am bored to death with trying to educate people who think that is "giving Iraq WMDs".

A summary of government actions during the 80s and 90s.

    http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82/

Many people in this room weren't around or were very young during the 80s when these events were taking place. It makes it difficult to have a meaningful discussion about what transpired.

Saddam started the Iran-Iraq war by invading Iran. We've been through this many times before. The U.S. supported Saddam as an over-reaction to the Iranian revolution in 1979, which by the way was a result of the frustration the people of Iran had with the U.S. having the Shah installed there for a couple decades.

The U.S. was a major money and arms supplier to Iran. The trouble is that the U.S. lost control of Iran when the Shah was ousted.

Without having read the rest of this thread, I gotta mention that I find Saddam quite admiral in a certain respect. If you've ever watched the trial you see how powerful this man is, despite the fact that he's detained he still yells at the judge for being a 'pawn to the American invaders' and he actually refused to attend his own trial due to apparently 'unjust procedings'. When have you ever heard of someone getting away with refusing to attend his own trial? What a guy. Oh, but that slaughter thing he did was horrible and all.......

I'd still like to see a comedy sketch where Kerry and Edwards play Batman and Robin. That would be great. :) Their personalities match the characters.

That trial is going to drag on so long that Saddam will probably die of natural causes or be killed at the courtroom when insurgents launch rockets at it (or some other mishap). There's been trials like this before that went on for many years.

Yeah I expected a response quite like the one I got. I don't find him admirable cause he's a brutal killer. He's exactly the kind of person that should be executed. So was Hitler, who was also a brilliantly admirable man. These are just unfortunate cases of brilliance gone to waste through racism and belief.

Could you imagine Bush going through a trial like the one Saddam is in. Guy would probably sit there with that monkey look on his face looking around and asking his lawyers whats going on every two minutes.

Not that that has anything to do with anything.....so sorry to interrupt your lively debate gentlemen...........

Those insurgents are resourceful and clever. They'd love to take out Saddam for the sake of embarassing the U.S.

They used the old 'bomb in the donkey cart' trick to hit the green zone and the old 'bomb in the cement truck' trick to hit the U.N. office and kill U.S. ambassador DeMello. They might even try the old 'bomb in the Saddam' trick.

I think we should have a Farm Film Celebrity Blow-up like they used to do on SCTV. Right when Saddam is at the peak of yelling and screaming in defiance in the court room, he blows up!

"He blowed up good, didn't he?"
    "Yeah! Blowed up real good!"

I'm not going to blindly believe ANYTHING bushco said about saddam to justify his rape of Iraq.
I'm looking at their past record.

saddam said he had no WMD.
    jr. said he did.
    Who was lying?

saddam said he had no al-queda ties.
    jr. said he did.
    Who was lying?

People said that saddam tortured and murdered his own people.
    What are we doing there?
    The same fucking thing.

Don't forget, the U.S. supported saddam as a valued ally until '91.

jr. lied and has killed over 40,000 Iraqi's (most of them civilians) and over 2,100 U.S. citizens have died over there BASED ON jr's LIES. Is that worse than what saddam did?

I think that if saddam's in prison, jr should be right next to him.

Don't forget that includes many past U.S presidents, who slaughtered countless native Americans, wiping out entire cultures and races.

Reminding you that U.S. history is rife with mass slaughter and genocide is not justifying the acts of others.

But if you excuse US from doing it, don't condemn others for doing the same thing.
