Two very different artists and while I enjoy both of their styles, I do have a preference for Janis. For me it is the emotion she was able to convey and share.

I do not think I have ever listened to any of her music and felt it was only for commercial reasons that it was recorded. There was just something about the lady that causes a feeling of comfort or coming home when I hear her.

I do like Grace as well and the lady has talent. I have no clue what people mean about her looks as I think she is still a beautiful lady.

i don't know, there's more to it than that. i suppose if all other things were equal, i would lean toward the second option. but all other things are never equal, and it always comes down to the end result rather than just the style of singing.

the recording of white rabbit on that video and the recording on the 8-track i had have some differences. understandably. a couple people have argued over, but i can see now they've been recorded both ways. the men/one man (on the chessboard) and of course door mouse and door knob.

Since they were so different I can't choose one over the other.

I love both of their voices and songs and even if I saw a reason to pick one above the other I couldn't. One of my favourite things of Jefferson Airplane by the way, is their debut album without Grace Slick. Hmm Chauffeur blues and that stuff :cheers2: In this case I just can't pick a favourite though! Sometimes I prefer the rawer vocal style of Janis and sometimes nothing suits better than Grace Slick's voice with some surrealistic tunes behind it :D

And how the fuck do you measure how Janis is more unique or original than Grace Slick anyway? :p Countless of people have recycled the blues like Janis with their own raw voice. Not that it doesn't sound great but there's not much original about that.

Ever listen to the 'Great Society' stuff with Grace Slick? It's about the roughest recording she ever did so far as I know. I really like it although haven't heard any for sometime.

Another female singer from that general epoch I used to like was Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention.

I prefer Bless it's pointed little head. Although I love that raw and pure vocal style of Janis it is simply not what I am looking for in JA's or Grace Slick's sound ;)

If I had to choose a fav in music between Janis, Grace and Sandy Denny I could pick a favourite: it would be Sandy indeed. Not just for her superb vocal sound but also because she sang in one of the best folk rock bands I have ever heard. I also really like Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior but then we're heading in kind of another kind of folk I guess. I knew both Fairport and Steeleye Span before Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane due to my parents record collection :cheers2:

Haha yes, he seems so fanatic about liking posts of people that favor Janis I am curious if he would have hit the dislike button for the other opinions if that option was still available :p

    Probably.

Openminded opinions? Or people? Or just the people that claim to be openminded but show themselves to be biased? I like to think I am openminded and not that bad at all. Of course I lack objectivity in that regard but still... :bobby:

I agree - Janis is one thing, Grace another. I always liked the atmosphere of those early Great Society recordings though, and they give a glimpse of Grace Slick in a formative stage of her career. Of the JA albums, Surrealistic Pillow and Crown of Creation are two that stick in my mind.

Also agree about Sandy Denny, and to an extent Maddy Prior. I'd rate 'Liege and Lief' perhaps my fave folk rock album.

Janis...White people weren't use to someone like her. I think that's one thing that people latched on to.

That only happened once: I was trying to "like" another post (by someone else) and clicked on my own by mistake. Thanks.

Actually I "liked" some of the posts that favored Grace more than Janis. And I've never cared for the dislike button (methinks we've had this conversation before) :p
