Whoopi Goldberg is a close second.

A discussion of art and music degenerating to celebrity gossip/worship, happens every time.

    Ain't post-modern culture wonderful? :beatnik:

PS In a street fight, who would win, Janis or Grace?
Thats a no-brainer, Janis any day!

As a blues singer, Janis was peerless

You're 99% right but you’re also speaking to a fan of Star Trek TNG and Whoopi Goldberg’s role as Guinan carries a lot of weight with me

Shit, Janis was totally fearless even when it came to the Hell's Angels: That says a lot.

P.S. I agree that she was the greatest white blues singer we've been blessed with (so far).

In truth, I only liked Bette Midler in The Rose: Every single movie she made after that was a waste of money (the price of a ticket) and time (IMO).

A biopic about Janis would be good. I actually don't know a lot abut her life.

Yeah, I totally agree. We've had biopics about Hendrix, The Doors, John Lennon, but nothing about Janis. Oh, you can see a play (Love, Janis), but it has little to do with the musical reality and social significance of Janis. Not too astounding, considering the play is based on a book written by Laura Joplin. Janis had a remarkable life - apart from her music. And unless you still read books (which fewer and fewer folks are doing), one will never know the obstacles Janis overcame.

P.S. Buried Alive (IMO) is still the best biography written about Janis Joplin. But I still am keeping my fingers crossed for a biopic...

I might check out 'Buried Alive'. It's been a while since I read any biographies.

Oh yeah. There is a totally awesome documentary (Janis: The Way She Was) which was actually shown at the theatres, and ultimately released on video in the early 1970s. I was fortunate enough to find a copy in 1979 (for $2!!) at a garage sale. I still have it.

As far as I know (and I've done numerous Google searches) the doc is not available on DVD. So more than one hardcore Joplin fan has offered me as much as $100 for this rare and priceless piece of Joplin's music and life. But I'm not selling. It really is the closest thing I've been able to find about the life and times of Janis Joplin.

You can find bits and pieces of it on the internet. But it's not the same as actually having the video. I'm just so grateful that I did not toss my VCR when DVDs suddenly became all the rage. Janis totally rocks in this film. Hell, the viewer even gets to take a long peek at her infamous 10 year high school reunion.
She was not a happy camper. And she honestly stated as much to the world:

"They laughed me out of class, out of town, and out of the state. So I'm goin' home." - Janis Joplin

Maybe you should think about converting it into a video file of some kind. I have some old VHS tapes going back to the 80's which have deteriorated a lot.
Sounds to me like it would be worth preserving.

Yeah, it's well worth checking out. Most libraries have a copy, and it was published just a few years after Janis died. Plus the author (Myra Friedman) knew Janis on a personal and professional level. So the book really does seem to get close to the truth of Janis Joplin. Which is so rare during these totally sensational times.

    P.S. I give the book 4 stars...

Amazon have it for the kindle, but at £6.85 it's a bit steep. Used PB for £1.76. I'll go for that I think.

Let you know what I think when I've read it. Thanks for the recommendation. The review also makes it sound interesting.

Awesome idea. I don't know how to do this on my own, but I have plenty of computer nerd-friends that might be willing to help me out. :)

Wow, that was quick! LOL. Yeah, let me know what you think after you've read the book. :)

P.S. Paperback seems like a better option for sure. But your public library does not have a copy?

It's quite an easy thing to do. And worth doing, as you've then got it in a format where you can share it with others.

I very much doubt I'd get in from my local library.

But I've bee thinking for a while that of the great musical artists of that era, she is one I know very little about, other than through her music directly of course.

Tell me more? I've been able to make multiple VHS copies (which I gave to friends), but whenever I try to make a DVD copy, I'm told the material is copy guarded? WTF?
