How can this song be the greatest if these artists can't come near the guy they're paying tribute to (Dio I thought)?

 

I didn't consider any of the 8-minute monster production numbers. That's sort of a different category. To me, it's more impressive to pack a lot of bad-ass quality into less than 4.5 minutes.

Among the extra long, high drama production numbers that usually get considered for this kind of honor, I'll have to give my vote to Styx, "Come Sail Away". I don't know why it doesn't get nearly as much respect as its competitors in this category. Besides sounding great, the lyrics capture a lot of the romantic, liberal, idealistic spirit of the late seventies.

I especially love the piano intro. Live in concert, they usually end it the same way. I like that better than the studio fade-out. I can't find that version online.

It fits all sub-genres, everyone knows it.

It's the song, not a specific performance or artist.
And the fact that there are so many performances and so many artists who've played it is what makes it the best.
