i eat grits all the time. grits with butter, salt & pepper, grits with cheese, tomatoes & green pepper, garlic grits, onion grits, chili & cheese grits, grits with scrambled eggs or tofu, fried grits...i prefer the whole yellow corn grits but i've eaten hominy grits too. i'm vegetarian and i am trying to figure out a veggie substitute for red-eye gravy. i bake them into corn bread, also, with flax seed meal. makes a really wonderfully-textured, satisfying southern-style cornbread. my southern friend gil says cornbread should always be baked in a skillet! i don't put sugar on my grits but my son does. my daughter likes them "indian pudding" style with molasses. because, in spite of my grit-eating tendencies, i am the daughter of an authentic new england yankee, i do see the allure of sweetened cornmeal products, but would probably prefer maple syrup to sugar. i think that sweetened, spiced cornmeal mush or pudding is an entirely different food from grits, and should be treated as such. cornmeal mush or pudding uses a finer-milled cornmeal for a smoother texture, as does the light, sweet new england style cornbread. sweetened cornmeal mush is ok, but i prefer grits with cheese, peppers, and hot sauce!
Oh Man grits, with loads of cheese and butter and my scrambled eggs and turkey bacon all mushed up together.......... I LOVE IT!! My husband refuses to try them.... He said people who eat cream of wheat don't eat grits LOL and I eat grits but won't eat cream of wheat HAHAHA
Oh I know! Cream of Wheat is some gross looking shit, I remember trying it when I was little... I don't remember the taste but the texture was like thin, watery oatmeal, or maybe man protein. It made me gag. That shit is a crime against humanity. I'll put it in the same category as chitlins.
--------man protein oh my god i never thought of that, thanks, now they are 100 times worse.................
I love grits, hate cream of wheat. But I love cream of rice with a handful of craisins or dried cherries tossed in. Perfect carb load for hiking.
i LOVE cream of wheat. especially when i'm sick and cold and the weather is shitty. pour some milk, salt and sugar in there and call me blissful.
i'm not a fan of cream of wheat, either, but then the little ones have wheat allergies. when i make porridge (other than plain oatmeal) i'll use any combination of rice, millet, barley, flax, amaranth, and cornmeal or grits or whatever grain i have on hand. sometimes i'll buy a multi-grain hot cereal for myself that contains wheat, but cream of what (appropriate typo) is just way too processed for my taste.
I wonder if I could make my own cream of rice? Make a porridge, dehydrate and vac pack it? *Makes note to experiment*
do you have a home mill? if you mill sweet rice to the right texture you can just pack it and cook it with boiling water in a thermos wrapped in your camp towel overnight.
But do you put man protein on chitlins? Cuz that would be hot. I'll provide the financial backing and we could sell DVDs of that...
no. i don't like to mix my man protein...gotta be fresh and undiluted...so that it'll stick to my teeth and glue the back of my throat shut.
