Well race exists... The first definitions of race included three. Asian, African, and European. One could argue that Indigenous peoples of Australia, and the America's are very closely related to the Asian 'race' and that the Hispanic population is mostly a mixture of European and indigenous populations. This is simply separating people by distinguishable physical traits. Which we do with other species too. It's useful scientifically, specifically in the field of medicine and there's nothing wrong with keeping some cultural identity. I'm white and I feel I have none. The problem is great Poodles don't usually form packs which exclude Rhodesian Ridge Hounds.
The way I see it is that race is saying that humans are essentially different; as species of animals are. I don't know that that is the case. I was making it a point to say ethnicity rather than race for awhile (because ethnicity recognizes the geographical and cultural influences of our differences). I've slipped, may pick it up again soon unless you can prove me wrong =P
Well it is true specifically, as I've mentioned some 'races' are more prone to certain types of diseases, there are of course apparent physical differences because of migration diet breeding and a myriad of other factors. Ethnicity is more appropriate for most uses I'd say. But it may be a semantic argument. The more I travel the more I see people are the same all over the world.
African-American is not a race. It refers to African diaspora which has found it's way to the Americas. The RACE is called black, or sub-saharan African. Although I suppose you're partly right, since African-Americans are a mix of dozens of African ethnicities, which could count as being a new ethnicity in itself. Caucasian is a race, but isn't treated as so. Both Europeans and Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi people fit into that category, but if you were to ask an Indian if he's caucasian he would say "no, I am Indian." White refers to European Caucasians, so it is correct to use. Please, if you're going to try to correct me, make sure that you yourself are also correct before doing so.
This seemed slightly hyperbolic to me in the sense that you gave the analogy race to species. I thought of what he said more like a sub category of humans. e.i. what "species" are we? human. What kind of human? White/black/indoafricaucasindian. That in the same way, "what species of pet do you have?" Canine. What kind of canine? Labrador retriever. There is most definitely a physiological and psychological difference between races too. Even though blacks are only 12% of the US, they take up the most prison space at ~35%. White people have thinner skin than any other race. Asians tend to be shorter, while blacks tend to be taller. Hair color that is any different than black is almost exclusively a white thing, while eye color variation past dark brown/black is mainly a white and middle eastern thing. Black people are more likely to get HIV. etc. etc. I could go on, but these are demographics we have used to learn facts about what makes us different. There is no point in arguing that we are all the same.
I wrote a response to this that didn't get posted >_< this one will be shorter African-American is a race because it was on the census. One of the major ways we distinguish facts and statistics. I would consider it as a race because of that. Indians are most definitely Asian. I have many that live in my building and that I go to school with and they always say they are Asian. They have an Asian religion, eat a lot of the same foods, and in some countries look a lot more like north east Asians. Asia spans all the way into Iraq, so I would assume India and the other countries you posted are Asian.
They live in Asia. Their race is Caucasian. For example; England is in Europe, the people there are white Caucasian. India is in Asia, the people there are Asian Caucasian. Do you know what I mean?
It all boils down to meaningless labels in order to classify and pigeonhole people that cannot be easily classified.
Haha, that was funny This is the kinda thing I am talking about though. Obviously people think being black is cool and being white is lame. That's why people chose to be called black most often, and sometimes just call themselves black because they look it! I am like so white, I love snow When someone likes snow you know they are white > j/kj/k But seriously... (no one get offended. I am high and just talking out of my ass right meow)
Lol, this thread is hilarious. I still have a tiny bit of a tan. I'm mostly hispanic, but my skin is super porcelain white. Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using Tapatalk
You know what's funny, when American's say they are half white with Mexican, or Japanese, or Cherokee, they don't even explain what white they are. Obviously I'm Scandinavian, so when ethnic folk bunch me up with other tribes like Celtic, Germanic, or Saxon it really starts to piss me off.
