What do you mean? All it takes is a simple DNA test to show that all black people have genes in common, all Western Europeans have genes in common, all Japanese have genes in common, and etc.

Race isn't based on genetics, nor is it as simple a map as you make it. People of Mediterranean decent have different genes than people of North German decent, people of west Africa have different genes than those of east Africa, Chinese people have different genes than people of Japanese decent, ect.

Back to the main point though, we don't base race on genetics, and everyone's DNA is different, you might find common strands in certain areas, for example up in Scandinavia a dominance of genes for blond hair, but it'd be impossible to map races by DNA considering the huge variations even in the same countries.

    eeeeexactly

or to put it another way, dtfw, what is black? what is white? what is asian?
or better yet...what is caucasoid, mongoloid, or negroid?

some people claim there are three races, some claim there are over 50 races. that points to the fact that it is socially constructed. remember how earlier in this thread people couldn't figure out who the caucasoid races included? that's because the concept isn't real, we apply the chraecteristics arbitrarily.

so, i ask again...what is black? what is white? what is asian? what is latino?

I never called blacks African, or Mediterranean people Western European.

Blacks refer to sub-saharan African people, but they are different than Khoisans or pygmies, for example. Race IS a social construct when people group differing people into one race (for example, if an American saw a Khoisan, they would think that he were black), but biologically, race IS real.

I think you may be mixing race and ethnicity up. Germanic and Celtic people, for example, are both white but are different ethnicities.

all it takes to destroy your own argument is to use the word all. :p

But they do all have genes in common. Western Europeans all have fair skin, for example. All Japanese people naturally have black hair, etc.

Then what exactly is Western European, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, they're all Mediterranean people but are also western European.

Then there is literally thousands if not millions of various races. This is why there is no biological race because it'd be asinine, race is fully a social construct based on appearances.

Not to mention the fact people carry numerous genes, it's just a matter of what is recessive and what is dominant. Just because I don't have red hair doesn't mean I might not carry the gene for it. It's why say a black couple where one parent had one white grandparent can in fact have a child that appears mostly white, or vice versa in rare cases.

this is a perfect example of how you yourself construct race. you say "black" means those that are from sub-saharan africa? live in sub-saharan africa? are decendents of subsaharan africa? i'm not sure which it is, but i have never heard this type of criteria for "black". for instance, i could construct "black" as anyone with skin that it of a complexion darker than a paper bag.

i am not the one confusing race and ethnicity. race is a social construct pertaining to a group with shared physical characteristics that is considered to be a distinct group. it is a social choice to decide which features matter. and often these chracteristics that define a race change over time. interbreeding over thousands of years makes the biological component that some use meaningless. ethnicity is based on nationality, language, religion, culture etc. no shared physical characteristics are necessary.

Going with the western European thing, for more example, I'm mostly Italian, Italians tend to have more of an olive skin tone as well as dark hair, bumpy noses, tons of body hair, well, I got the dark hair, I got the nose with the giant bump in it, got the oddles and noodles of body hair, but my skin wound up pale as fuck, I can barely tan, but I don't really burn either.

Also what is black, there are varying levels of black, western/eastern Africa have more of a light brown kind of black, where central Africa along the west coast, think Angola, Congo, Gabon, Rwanda, ect are generally a much dark shade of black.

Now let's do it with white people.

Or Asians, both Indians and Koreans are technically lumped in together as Asians, but they look nothing alike.

Western Europe refers to places like France and Germany. Have you ever seen someone who is French or German with dark skin? They can be tanned, but not darker than that. I'm speaking of nationality of course... There are plenty of immigrants living in France and Germany who are of different races and ethnicities. Show me a picture of a Japanese person who naturally doesn't have black hair, please.

An ethnicity refers to sub-categories of people within a race. Different tribes in Africa are different ethnicites, but their race is black for instance. Of course, race and ethnicity refers to people who developed certain traits because they are geographically separate from other groups of humans.

That is a social construct, yes.

    K'

    http://xorsyst.com/japan/japans-brown-haired-plague/

    *edit*

Japan is a special case too outside of most of the world's nations. Japan is an island nation who's people have aside from waging war with China every century have been extremely isolated in terms of genetics for thousands of years. Only other island nations come even remotely close to Japan's case.

Actually ethnicity generally refers to cultural divisions between different nations. Race has nothing to do with ethnicity nor is it a subdivision. For example, Hispanics are an ethnicity different from most of North America due to a vastly different culture, history, language, ect over the past 400 years. Also, about 1/3 of Latin Americans happen to be white in regards to race.

People often ask me where my ethnicity lies. 'Half Indian' I say. Generally they're asking because they wonder about my olive skin tone. Often I'll add '..half British' but that's not usually what they want to know. Regardless, it doesn't really matter.

That's because the "Japanese" weren't the first people in Japan. The Japanese came from mainland Asia, but before them, there were the aboriginal Ainu people. The Ainu intermarried with the Japanese, and brown hair is a recessive gene for the Japanese who have Ainu heritage.

I have no idea if that's true, I'm just making assumptions. I'm sure this is the cause, though.

Their hair is dyed.... If you ever go to japan or korea you will see that EVERYONE has naturally black hair.

Can you not see the black roots?

Race is scientific just like dogs breeds. dreadlock is the only one making much sense in this thread...

Wrong. Those people in those pictures are more than likely just models. High chance their hair is dyed. Rare it is but some Asians are fair haired. Even in India some very few Indians are born with real blonde hair. Not heard of genetic throwbacks?

Did you not notice how the article said while most people do have black hair some people in Japan do have brown hair and appear to be getting shit for it.

In fact saying EVERYONE in Japan has black hair is in itself kind of racist since you're making a blanket claim on a whole people that just isn't true.
